Publisher's summary

The outrageous and often hilarious autobiography of legendary session musician and lead guitarist and singer of Toto.

No one explodes one of the longest held misconceptions of music history better than Steve Lukather and his band Toto. The dominant sound of the late ‘70s and ‘80s was not punk, but a slick, polished amalgam of rock and R&B first staked out on Boz Scaggs’ Silk Degrees. That album was shaped in large part by the founding members of Toto, who were emerging as the most in-demand elite session crew in LA, and further developed on the band’s self-titled multiplatinum debut. A string of massive hits followed for Toto while Lukather and bandmates David Paich, Jeff Porcaro, and Steve Porcaro also served as creative linchpins on some of the most successful and influential records of the era, including Michael Jackson’s Thriller.

In this incisive memoir, Lukather tells the complete Toto story. He also lifts the lid on what went on behind the closed studio doors, shedding light on the unique creative processes of some of the most legendary names in music: from Quincy Jones, Michael Jackson, Paul McCartney, Stevie Nicks, and Elton John to Miles Davis, Joni Mitchell, Bruce Springsteen, Don Henley, Roger Waters, and Aretha Franklin. Lukather’s extraordinary tale also encompasses the dark side of stardom and the American dream. Frank, engaging, and often hilarious, The Gospel According to Luke is no ordinary rock memoir. It is the real thing.

Wow Best Rock Biography Ever

I’m blown away by this story.
The best part was listening to Steve tell his story. I laughed so hard, I cried, felt sad, joy the entire spectrum. The best part was I felt like I was sitting with Him having a conversation. Had no idea how many songs he’s done. Created a Luke playlist. Been jamming Toto again non-stop.
This ranks #1 out of all the rock biographies!!

An Absolute Must

I cannot recommend this book enough. Even better than reading it though is listening to Steve tell it. This is dense material meaning there is so much reference to the music scene and name dropping that it will make your head spin with delight. Luke fleshes out the LA music scene story (according to his experience) that pieces together a gigantic historic music puzzle. There is far too much to comment on in this book...every page has something else that helps define what was going on in the world of music at one of its most formative times. I love his irreverence as it it always treads between the raunchy humor, honesty and introspection. Steve is what he is and there is no pretense about him. Musicians who want to make it in the music business would do well to hear Steve's story because it demonstrates the odds against making it, the incredible contacts it takes and the shear amount of discipline it takes to be "successful". Perhaps I will write another review later after hearing this again several times but for now my heart beats with the rhythm of this book as does my entire generation and my children's generations as well.

Luke’s total honesty and heart comes through

Could NOT stop listening - LOVE IT! Luke’s total honesty and heart comes through like it does through every note he plays.
And having him read it - MAKES ALL THE DIFFERENCE. Lots of colorful language but that’s Luke! A great read/listen and an amazing look at the history of music that he has contributed so very much too for over 40 years and still continues too. Its kind of like reading a Music Appreciation History book of the mid-70's to now...BUT, this is filled with endless humor you'd NEVER get from a college professor (and like I said, with Lukather actually reading it, its even BETTER). I have literally had uncounted laugh out loud, tears in my eyes moments while learning more and more about both Luke's amazing career and the progression and cross-over of all the amazing (and some not amazing) music that has come from both he and his peers. I highly recommend it!

Luke's guitar is the soundtrack of my life

Awe man, I'm not even all the way though the book yet, but I have to write a review. I NEVER do this, but this GUY! I mean he is just such an absolutely incredible musician. After listening and catching myself smiling from ear to ear at his recollections in his own voice, this one gave me all the feels from a time growing up, when everything in music hadn't already been done (or worse, turned into some computer derived autotuned bs). The SONGS!!!! I now realize that Steve Lukather was/is the golden guitar string that has resonated throughout almost all of my favorite music from the 70's to the present. Being the daughter of a Jazz drummer in old time Vegas during the 70's and 80's, it hits on all my fondest memories of the cool lingo and the magic that happens for a very few really really talented musicians when they get together and create. I so highly recommend. I lOVE me some Steve and always will!

You't don't have to be a Toto fan to enjoy this!

Steve Lukather is blast! His narration is real and honest. Luke doesn't do much kiss and tell and stays away from graphic drug stories as seems to be typical in the current wave of rock and roll tell alls. Instead, he covers what guitar and Toto fans want to hear. After listening, I feel like I know him know, at least a little bit. He has led a fascinating life and discusses his successes and failures. I really appreciated learning about the life of a LA session musician. Especially interesting to me was the time he devoted to late Toto and session drummer Jeff Porcaro. You don't have to be a Toto fan to enjoy this book though. Luke is so funny and irreverent, it's hard not to like him and all his fascinating stories about music and his life. Buy this so it gives him incentive for another book! You'll like it.

Charming And Insightful!

I knew about Steve Lukather for years but now I know who he is. I am sad that this audiobook is over because I could have listened to his stories for many more hours. I am a fan of rock autobiographies and this is one of the best. I am now on a quest to listen to as many songs and albums that Lukather had a hand in making that I can. His reading was casual and engaging like having the most interesting passenger in my car just passing times with tales of highs and lows, and all with an often self-deprecating sense of humor. I enjoyed every minute of it.

Magnificent!

Imagine sitting down in front of Steve Lukather for 10+ hours and him telling you his life story. This is a great introspective look (and listen) into the life and times of a music legend! Thank you Steve!

Felt for the guy and the band...

Tough breaks for sure, but persistence reigns. Thought I’d end up feeling sorry for him, but am encouraged by his new ending and renewed enthusiasm. Thanks for the music and sacrifices Luke!
