Publisher's Summary

Two cousins, Rory and Arden, lie unconscious in a hospital burn unit. The fire, which broke out in their shared college dorm room, killed another student, and the police want answers. Tension between Rory and Arden's parents was already at an all-time high before the fire, owing to a recent financial crisis and the decline of the family business. As the parents huddle anxiously in the waiting room, carefully avoiding the subject of their own unraveling relationships, disturbing truths come to light. This is the deeply moving story of a family's struggle to hold together while their secrets threaten to tear them apart.

Carla Buckley is the author of The Deepest Secret, Invisible, and The Things That Keep Us Here, which was nominated for a Thriller Award as a best first novel and the Ohioana Book Award for fiction.

So sad!

I really liked this book a lot. The narration was impeccable. The story was different and very interesting. I was surprised I liked it so much because typically prefer more action and less drama, but there was a lot of suspense throughout and it was hard to stop listening. I will try other books by this author, and definitely look for more read by these narrators.

A very good listen

This book was well worth listening too. I was drawn in to the swirling dynamics of all the people involved. A warning be prepared to cry.

Wow, great book!

Great production, the narrators did a wonderful job, portraying their characters well enough to make them seem real! Very engaging story, with a great ending. The only very minor criticism I might add would be that I mixed up the characters some, but that is probably my fault, there are many parallels and similarities between the families involved. I would highly recommend this audiobook, primarily to women, I suspect my husband would consider it a "chick" book, but that's not a negative. The character development is so very good, with all the twists and turns long relationships carry with them. Very, very good audiobook!

Awake till 2 AM!

This book kept me enthralled until I finally finished listening at 2:00 am. Moving, suspenseful , emotional... I have college aged daughters which added angst knowing that we never really know what is going on in their worlds, even though we want to believe they are happy and adjusted and more mature than they truly can be at that age.

I could not stop listening.

This is the first time I have ever written a full review despite having been listening to audiobooks for many years. This book was so suspenseful, it's storyline so engaging and it's characters so well-developed, I could not stop listening. I liked it to the point of distraction! I highly recommend it.

Lousy title for a really good book

This is the story of an over-stressed extended family during the 6 months or so when best friends and first cousins Rory and Arden leave their posh private high school and become roommates at a local college - instead of following the grander school plans each had been working towards. Add in their parents (brothers and their wives) who have their own financial and romantic troubles, and a horrible accident that leaves both girls in the hospital. Mix in a lot of deceit on everyone's part, and you've got a rather compelling story, told from alternating points of view of three of the characters. I really enjoyed it.

Quick end

Well developed characters and story line. But disappointed with the abrupt ending. I kept expecting a little more.
