Publisher's Summary

For fans of The Tattooist of Auschwitz and Kate Furnivall comes a gritty tale of courage, betrayal and love in the most unlikely of places.

Germany, 1944. Taken from the camps to serve the Führer himself, Anke Hoff is assigned as midwife to one of Hitler’s inner circle. If she refuses, her family will die.

Torn between her duty as a caregiver and her hatred for the Nazi regime, Anke is swept into a life unlike anything she’s ever known - and she discovers that many of those at the Berghof are just as trapped as she is. And soon, she’s falling for a man who will make her world more complicated still....

Before long, the couple is faced with an impossible choice - and the consequences could be deadly. Can their forbidden love survive the horrors of war? And, more importantly, will they?

Critic Reviews

"Incredibly powerful, harrowing but ultimately uplifting. I couldn’t put this down." (Katie Fforde)

"A fascinating story which had me forgetting it’s fiction! So well written, I was left pondering if the events could actually be true. Enthralling!" (Kitty Neale)

Plausible and fascinating

This was my first endeavor into a fictional audiobook. It took me a minute to get past the way Winwood animates her reading, having only used audiobooks for nonfiction. Once I was acclimated, the story came alive. Having lived in Germany for a year, its history has been of great interest and while there is no proof Braun had a child with Hitler, Robotham weaves a tale that is both gripping and plausible. I couldn’t stop lite omg until the last words of the epilogue!

One of the best novels ever read.

Beautiful, gripping, sad -- a story that envelops you.
The writing is excellent, the turn of a phrase heart rendering, the perceptions deep.
I didn't want it to end and when it did, I returned to the beginning to listen more carefully to the rich tapestry of words and imagery.
I think the narration is one of the best I've heard and made the book That much more
enjoyable.
I wish MS. Jonathan had a collection of works, I would read everyone of them.
