To this day, July 1 is often remembered for being the bloodiest day in British military history. Indeed, the British suffered some 62,000 casualties in that one day of fighting alone. As gruesome as that statistic is, it's just one of the many dark legacies left by the Somme Offensive.

Great evaluation of the operational level of war during WW I
Great overview of the generals who lead the operational level of war during WW I on the Western Front. It did much to help expand my understanding of its importance and how when ignored can lead to tactical success but overall mission failure (German Spring Offensive).
If I had a criticism, the author seemed too aligned to the USAWC’s dogma on warfare—often felt I was at Carlisle Barracks getting a lecture from a resident professor.
Overall an excellent analysis of generalship at the operational level.
