Publisher's Summary

Murder at the Mall of America

When a magician is murdered in the midst of his act at the Mall of America, Eli Marks is asked to step in and take over the daily shows - while also keeping his eyes and ears open for clues about this bizarre homicide.

As Eli combs the maze-like corridors beneath the Mall of America's massive amusement park looking for leads, he also struggles to learn and perform an entirely new magic act. Meanwhile, the longtime watering hole for Uncle Harry and his Mystics pals is closing, so in addition to the murder investigation and the new act, Eli must help the grumpy (and picky) seniors find a suitable new hangout.

Best in series thus far

Although the author states that he is not a magician, he obviously has researched the classic illusions and techniques. The characters are well-developed and interesting and are people in whom you can become invested. ALL the books in this series are excellent, however this one is my favorite. Sure, some situations are far from likely to occur, but shake out your believe-a-tron and just go with it.

Narrator Jim Cunningham ruins this book

John Gaspard's characters are so engaging and his writing so amusing that the mystery sometimes feels like a sideline, a tension and question holding the story together but the puzzle is not the main joy. In a previous review, I called Cunningham's narration competent and suited to the main character Eli. In this book, his rendition is unbearable. He pauses after every phrase. After a while, I was gritting my teeth, wanting to know what was happening but suffering through Cunningham's destruction of the English language. Here are a few examples of parts of sentences that don't reveal any spoilers: "I glanced PAUSE around the room again," "the pizza box PAUSE from our lunch," "I stepped back PAUSE and took in the entire wall PAUSE with its...." No one talks or even reads like this!

The floating light bulb

This audio book just wasn't my cup of tea! I really don't enjoy comedy of this sort. It seems more like slap stick style which I hate.

Such a unique & uplifting Mystery series!

I’ve enjoyed the audio version for the first 6 books + 3 short stories in this delightful series. I loved the Floating Light Bulb. It moved quickly, made me laugh, and left me with a smile - while looking forward to the last (for me) book in the series. The cast of characters are unique and their friendship rings true. Highly recommended. I can listen free thru the Plus membership but I’m purchasing them for myself. Just in case.

Excellent magic mystery series

Really well written mystery books that use Eli’s and his father’s experiences as professional magicians to help solve the case. The narration is spot on and the writing is conversational and flows well. The other magicians make the stories interesting and fun.

I really enjoyed this book, great fun!

Jim Cunningham is amazing as a narrator. I have listened to him all day literally, I binged this story in one day. I am very unwell at the moment so listening to audible is helping me relax. I am loving the series it's just so much fun, I am invested in the characters and their relationships. I love Eli and Harry and the ladies are so funny. The setup for the story is fantastic, and slightly creepy too? I think it's the... no can't mention that or the, no can't mention that either... Just listen to the story. I think I can say confidently this is my favourite book of the series so far, so many things happen that are either random or I saw coming but not like that, and I was not expecting that but so glad it did. I really hope John Gaspard keeps writing these wonderful books!
