Publisher's summary

They called him . . . Preacher.

He came west to the Rockies as a young runaway and grew into a legend among the already legendary frontier mountain men. They called him Preacher - a name that would become a monument to all who sought adventure in the savage wilderness of America's untamed west. The only man with the skills to lead a wagon train on the last leg of the rugged Oregon trail, Preacher knows they're headed into trouble. It's hard enough for a hundred greenhorns to survive the wilds of the northwest; being pursued by thieving renegade outlaws and Indians with a thirst for gold - and blood - makes it damn near impossible. Somehow, Preacher has to get these pilgrims through safely - if he doesn't want to end up buried along the trail with the rest of them . . . .

Wow!

Both the author and narrator are new to me. I really enjoyed this audiobook. And J. Rodney Turner performance was spot on. I will be listening to more stories from this author and narrator. Totally worth the credit. Enjoy! ☺️🤠

Great story

This was my first time with this author. An excellent story of our not too distant past. The narrator has the perfect voice for the reading of this series of old west stories. Great narrator.

Great story Great narration

My husband and I were leaving Iowa for Colorado, Wyoming & South Dakota. I needed a book to keep his interest - THIS WAS IT!! After we got home we sat outside and discussed it. He is a muzzleloader hunter and was able to answer questions I would come up with while I drove the 2000 miles. It was so great we are planning on spending our evenings this summer sitting on the patio listening to the series.

Entertaining Mountain Man Book Series

Get your possibles ready ... If you like cowboy books and want to read what happened to characters before cowboys during the 1830's, then this is a must read book series. You have to start with book 1 if you want the full experience, as all the books have historical links.

Furthermore, all of the author's book series link to other book series in some way or fashion. IE his other books will often fondly refer to Preacher the main character and legend of the West.

For the most part this book #1 is good but not great. The main mountain men characters are great. But the bible thumping missionaries are ignorant, stubborn, often stupid and most often quite annoying to listen to. This book is harder to listen to than most of Johnstone's books because listening to the missionary characters idiotic point of views is really hard to put up with.

But if you want to hear a story about the 1st wagon train to reach the west over the Cascades, with lots of bad guys and bad Indians - then this is a must read.

I've never like the author's penchant to use characters who enjoyed raping women, girls and boys. But this author does incorporate this into many of his books. Sometimes way to much that I have to quit reading or fast forward through some of his books, which go into great detail in this regard. So this author does have a really dark side to him.

The narrator is dry and a little boring, but thankfully he does not try to use many fake stupid voices. So he is OK.

If you like actual historic stories then this book mixes in factual data and stories into the storyline, which was interesting to me but might annoy others.

Don't judge a book by its cover.

First read Colter's Journey and had been looking for another Mountain Man type book. Had seen this book before but passed it up because of the cover, just did not look like a mountain man. Finally gave it try and was not disappointed. Great story and performance.
