Publisher's Summary

When 17-year-old Calli meets her new riding instructor, Justine, their attraction to each other is nearly immediate. But while young Calli is learning what falling in love is about, Justine is driven by her competitive nature to have it all.

Twenty years after their initial meeting, Calli travels to France to write her new novel. It’s been 10 years since she’s last seen or heard from Justine, and all she knows of her is that she resides somewhere in France - and even that isn’t certain. If she were to find Justine, would she still be the same person and could they finally take the path they planned on so long ago?

Is anyone ever truly free from their first love?

Exquisite!

I loved-loved-loved this novel! Initially, It started off seeming like a Young Adult novel, which I am not a fan of.... But I am so glad I stuck it out because it is not. It is such a lovely storyline. It is moving, heart-wrenching and has moments of quirky humor. The Author, Erinne Bates, has done a marvelous job! I would highly recommend this audiobook. I look forward to more from her in the future! The narrator, Lucy Emmerson, was outstanding! There are several different accents in this audiobook and she did an amazing job of bringing these lovely words to life. I have never heard any of her work before but you can bet I will be looking for any work from her in this genre! Well Done! This one deserves more than 5 stars!

Not What I Would've Titled the Book, but SO GOOD!

This is my first book by this author and narrator and I'm impressed! I'm in my car a lot for work and I found myself hurrying to get back to my car to continue with the story. The book starts with the main character about 18 years old and we follow her through the years as she falls in love a few times. There's much more to it of course, but I won't ruin any surprises. I absolutely loved the narrator. All her accents were swoon worthy :) the ending was not what I expected but it was perfect. Thanks for a great listen.

Fantastic Romance

I was not familiar with Erinne Bates' work until I came across the audiobook on Audiobooks Unleashed. The premise sounded interesting so I gave it a try. I loved the story was told through Calli's perspective throughout, providing the listener with a view of her awakening to other women and her relationship with Justine. The part I enjoyed most is that it does not take a standard romance path with these two characters. There were times I kept expecting certain outcomes based on reading other romance books, but this one continued to go in different directions, which I found very refreshing. The narration by Lucy Emerson was fantastic, providing different accents to the various characters, which kept the story interesting and enjoyable to listen to. I don't want to go into a lot of detail so as not to spoil the book for others. I found it to be a story that I couldn't stop listening to and I think many others will as well. If you are stuck in a rut when it comes to romance novels, give this one a try. It will leave you breathless at times as well as heartbroken at others. It was a fun listen and is one I'll be listening to again. I received a copy of this audiobook from Audiobooks Unleashed in exchange for a fair and unbiased review.

Love story

I loved the multiple love stories with such richly portrayed characters. I respected the honorable manner the author evolved her lesbian love story. From first love to forever love.

Amazon Reviewers Please Stop Spoiling the Ending!!

This was a wonderful story that took multiple directions. Narration was excellent and refreshing. I am frustrated by the amount of reviewers on Amazon (not on Audible, but the book readers) who told the ending and gave away details that should not be revealed ahead of time. Shame on you guys - I hope if anyone reads this they will revise their reviews and add the words SPOILER ALERT so we don't read stuff that shouldn't be revealed before we get the chance to enjoy the experience. Or simply delete the ending you carelessly gave away. Other than that... great wonderful story about someone's journey with love.

Emotional Win

Erinne Bates gets that first love feeling so right in this one, and the narrator is possibly the best I’ve heard.

Star Crossed Love

Justine, that Irish accent- swoon. Her first love always within Calli's heart. Then Finn's analytical brain & soul connection so heartfelt. Beautiful story! Excellent narration. Loved it!

lovely and well narrated story

Tags: first love, age gap, art Book: This is my first book by Erinne Bates. The story is nicely and interesting written. Without spoiling too much, I did root for another pairing, but in the end it all fitted the Storyline. I enjoyed this book very much. Narration: This was my first time listening to a narration from Lucy Emerson. I don’t like new narrators, because I know a couple of very good ones. But I have to say i was positively surprised! She portrayed the storyline in a fluid and gentle way. This audiobook will not be the last one I’ll be listening from Lucy Emerson. Rating: five out of five

A promising debut

When Calli’s mother insists she takes a riding class with twelve-year-old boys, the seventeen-year-old isn’t happy, until she meets the instructor. A former Olympic equestrian athlete from Ireland, Justine steals Calli’s breath. And when she’s looking for a place to stay and Calli’s parents offer her brother’s room, all sorts of dreams come true. Until life interferes and the young women get separated for many years. I didn’t enjoy this book as much as I hoped I would. The narration was pretty good, even with the foreign accents. I’m always rather tough on French accents and Lucy Emerson’s was okay, but do the French really not know about dirty martinis? I had never before heard of vodka with olives. Then again, I don’t drink cocktails… And is going to the Louvre such a big event when you’re staying in Versailles? I mean, yes, the Louvre is wonderful, but why does it sound like Calli wouldn’t have found her way there without Justine? Didn’t anyone tell her about the RER? I know these remarks aren’t very important and they probably wouldn’t have stuck with me if I had been carried away by the story. I felt the book stayed on the surface of things for more than half of it. I never really connected with the characters and didn’t find them very likeable. At first, I was surprised by both young women’s immaturity (Justine is twenty-one at the beginning, so not a teenager anymore, a young woman with a job, far from home). I quite liked the chemistry between them, and that’s something that stayed until the end. Far from being a sweet romance about two young women and their first love, this novel is really about Calli’s journey to get over this very powerful first love. Most reviews are very positive so it’s probably just that this book isn’t for me. The First Love is a debut novel, and as such, it’s promising. I received a copy of this audiobook from Audiobooks Unleashed in exchange for a fair and unbiased review.
