He was never meant to be a hero. Now he's humanity's last chance.

In a post-apocalyptic world scorched by flame and fear, fifteen-year-old Finn Camlock is nothing more than a burden. Powerless. Unwanted. Forgotten.

While others wield nova energy to protect their crumbling settlements, Finn scrapes by with menial tasks—until a journey to the Iron Mountain awakens something unexpected. Something impossible.

Now hunted by enemies of shadow and fire, Finn must forge his own strength or be consumed by the chaos rising around him. His blade is quick, but the war ahead moves quicker. And if he fails, the last remnants of humanity might fall with him.

Perfect for fans of Red Rising and The Hunger Games, this explosive coming-of-age tale delivers high-octane danger, searing emotion, and the thrill of finding power when all hope seems lost.

So what’s the audible equivalent of “absolute page turner”?? I knew Sean Kennedy came out with a new series but I just don’t have time to read so when I saw the first book was coming to Audible I could not wait to get it and now I have to wait for the next one! While this has a lot for fans of Dune, honestly it also just takes its own path with a huge twist and then leaves you clamoring for the next book! Once you start it, prepare to make time to finish it right away. Oh, and if you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to be so nervous in your first battle that you… well, you’ll just have to experience it for yourself!

Can’t wait for what’s next!

In a devastated world ruled by fear and fire, fifteen-year-old Finn Camlock survives by staying invisible, powerless among the elite nova-wielders who defend humanity’s last strongholds. A journey to Iron Mountain awakens a dangerous power within him, thrusting Finn into a war he doesn’t understand and making him a target of shadowed forces. As everything he once relied on slips away, Finn must decide who he is willing to become—because if he fails, humanity’s final chance at survival will be lost.

Author Sean Kennedy has crafted a story that feels both expansive and deeply personal, balancing high-stakes tension with an intimate coming-of-age journey. The characters are not only unique, but fully realized—each with distinct motivations, strengths, and vulnerabilities that make them feel authentic rather than archetypal. Watching the protagonist grow under pressure is especially rewarding; the emotional evolution feels earned, layered, and believable.

The plot twists are genuinely surprising without feeling forced. Just when you think you see the path ahead, the story shifts in a way that raises the stakes and deepens the conflict. The world building is solid and immersive, providing enough detail to ground the listener while allowing the imagination to breathe. Nothing feels over-explained, yet everything feels intentional.
Dialogue flows naturally, capturing the cadence of real conversation while still serving the story’s momentum. Combined with vivid descriptive language, the result is a fully immersive experience. The balance between action, reflection, and character interaction makes this not just an engaging listen, but one that lingers long after the final chapter.

The narrator, Ryan Duncan, delivers a compelling performance, using tonal inflections that vividly mirror the action and rising tension of the story. His clear articulation, paired with well-timed pauses, heightens suspense and allows pivotal moments to fully land. Subtle but distinct shifts in character voices make it easy to follow each perspective without distraction or exaggeration. He captures the emotional weight of a struggling teen navigating a harsh, post-apocalyptic world with authenticity and restraint. As the protagonist grapples with overwhelming responsibility, the narrator’s performance adds depth, urgency, and heart to every scene.

With its richly developed characters, gripping twists, immersive worldbuilding, and a narrator who brings every ounce of tension and emotion to life, this is an audiobook experience well worth adding to your library.

This was my first experience with this author's work, and it won't be my last. I was amazed by the worldbuilding, and I was impressed by the creativeness of some of the beings which populated the world. My attention was kept engaged by the surprising events and unexpected curves which just kept the story moving onward. I liked Finn, and I felt for him as he faced his trials and tribulations. I was entertained by Ryan Duncan's narration as his performance added to the story's entertainment for me. I was given a copy of the audiobook. I volunteered, without financial gain, to post this review which reflected my honest opinions regarding this audiobook.
