Story
These 1028 poems, grouped as 10 ‘Circles’ (mandalas), have variously been called hymns, poems or songs by Sanskrit scholars. The Rik (so pronounced by the ancient Angirases clans, or Seer-Priest families) was an experiment with sound. The emphasis is always on sounding the words perfectly. The focus tends to be on the ideas rather than on the authors in Vedic literature, they are largely religious in nature, reflecting the world view and spiritual preoccupations of ancient India.

The Bhagavad Gita is a gem so precious in India's spiritual treasury that many regard it not as a volume of sacred verse, but as a living manifestation of the Divine. In the summer of 1974, inside a balmy Boulder, Colorado, warehouse that served as a main hall of a fledgling Naropa Institute, some say a minor miracle occured: The reawakening of the Gita's living presence, as it unfolded in a series of wisdom teachings led by Ram Dass.

The ancient Indian Sanskrit epic the Rāmāyana was composed some time between the first and fifth centuries BCE. As is the case with most ancient literature firmly rooted in the oral tradition, precise dating is problematic. Traditionally attributed to the sage Valmīki, and composed in rhyming couplets, it is one of the two great Indian epics (the other being the Mahābhārata); consequently it is known and revered not just throughout the Indian subcontinent but also in South-East Asian countries as well, indeed wherever Hindu culture became established.

A Great Introduction to Gita
For people who haven't been exposed to Mahabharata or not know what Bhagavad Gita is, this is a great introduction. It is easy to follow. The concepts are explained logically.
The literal translation of Gita might be too difficult to follow or even misleading for the new.
Beautiful anecdotes and parables are used to explain the teachings in Gita.
The one aspect I didn't like, was Mr. Hartman's repeated plugs for his other book.

Not at all what I expected
I applaud the author for trying to bridge Eastern and Western thought, but the book seems to be focused a bit too much on Christianity and A Course in Miracles, almost to the point of being a fanatic of the latter.

Life changing
I started listening to the Bhagavad-Gita on Friday night as a recommendation from a friend. It is a moving story that address many thoughts that have wandered in and out of my mind for years. The narration is vivid and beautiful as I found comfort in Steven Hartman’s voice. I can already see small, but valuable changes in my thinking and reactions as I have just finished the book. My next listen will be to take notes...As I sent this to a dozen friends this weekend, it is worth your time and you are worth it.

An excellent way to understand the Bhagavad Gita.
What made the experience of listening to The Essence of the Bhagavad-Gita the most enjoyable?
It is explained in a simplistic way. It is attainable because of the way it is written. Once you have an understanding (which is impossible not to understand in this book) the rest of your life will become a lot easier.
What does Steven Hartman bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?
Steven Hartman has a lovely voice that is very easy to listen to. The way everything is explained has made this book one of my favourites. I will listen frequently. I didn't want it to finish.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
There were so many moments it is hard to define a particular one.
Any additional comments?
It really is a must for anybody who has a curiosity about the Bhagavad Gita.
