Publisher's summary

Evan never thought he was going to be special. As the adopted son of a tailor, he had always expected to manage the shop after his father passed. But when his Aura awakens, he finds himself entering Yesgol Academy of Magic, a place filled with the children of elite mages and nobles, all of whom have had magical education from the time they could walk. Among such prestigious company, Evan will have to learn fast or be left in the dust and in debt.

At Yesgol, he studies the arts of enchanting and divination, but all is not as it seems. As Evan pushes forward his skills as a mage to catch up with his peers, he finds himself entangled with a secret society for the reformation of magic, deals with the occasional extraplanar horror appearing in the shadows of the school, and catches the eye of a charming young noble who's been excommunicated from his family.

An Enchanting YA book

I was deep into this book. it had fantasy, magic flights, and cute romance. but kind of wish this had a young adult male to voice this book since the main protagonist is a boy. excited for the next book!

Great Book

The story does have a slow beginning but once the action and schooling begins the story becomes irresistible. I had it playing non stop through work, cooking, exercising, etc

I Immediately Bought the Next Book

Usually I don't care about the gender of the narrator matching the protagonist's gender, but it's jarring when told in first person. It's also jarring when she sometimes used a deeper voice for the character's lines than his first person narration.

Beyond that note, all I have is praise. I enjoyed the story immensely and immediately purchased the next book in the series.

Awesome to see a gay MC and for that to not be the focus of the novel. Sexuality is just one trait among a multitude and we so little representation of gays that it's rare to see this just being a trait.

Cute, gay, and magical

I really enjoyed it beginning to end. I related perhaps a bit too hard to the gay, socially-anxious, agoraphobic main character. The romance is cute and the story is mostly cohesive.
There were some minor stylistic things I didn't gel with (but that's a me issue and one I can get over) and a minor plot inconsistency, but overall, I'm excited to see where the series goes. I wait on the sequel with bated breath.

Story Great

this book was amazing. I love that the hero is relatable to introverts. Heroes in most books are clever and funny, confident to the point of arrogance. I also love the "newish" idea of magic in this universe. it's unlike any other fantasy/lit rpg I've read so far. it blends multiple ways magic is described in others to make its own flare. however, if you're reading this Tobias, I strongly advise against using this narrator again. she made an enthralling story very hard to get through. she just sounded bored through the whole book. she managed to use SOME minor inflections during exciting or action parts, but GEEZ. All in all a good book though.

Wonderful story!

Loved the story and universe the author hady created. Detailed, fun, and had perfect pacing.

The performance was great, but I wished the narrator softened the use of the "S" in their words. Some sentences were barely tolerable because of it.

Looking forward to the next novella's.

Great story but wrong narrator

I read the book and enjoyed it so much that I bought the audiobook. I was disappointed to find that the narrator was a woman. To delve into a book and really feel like you are part of the story you have to suspend disbelief a bit. When a story has a male MC and a male love interest it really throws you off if the narrator is a woman.

It took me a long while to slip into the story. I own 1 other book with this issue and have only listened to it again once since buying it 10 years ago.

Unfortunately this audiobook will most likely be like that one. This was a good book but don’t waste your money on it if you are wanting something to enjoy multiple times. It wasn’t worth the money to buy for a one time listen.

I hope if the sequel becomes an audiobook that the people that put it together get a male narrator. That is the only way I will buy the next one.
