Publisher's Summary

London 1814... Drake, Duke of Manchester is searching the Marriage Mart for a perfect bride. He wants a woman who is poised, sophisticated, and worthy of the title Duchess. But most of all, he wants a woman who does not want the useless emotion of love.

Socially awkward Miss Penelope Clayton isn't meant for marriage. A serious botanist, she has no desire to wed, so being forced by her guardian to participate in the Season to find a husband is torture. She'll never fit in with the ton, especially if they discover she's been pretending to be a man within the scientific community.

As Drake's family makes over Penelope, turning her from naive bluestocking to enchanting debutante, he is put upon to introduce her to society and eligible bachelors. Despite dance lessons and new gowns, Penelope is the opposite of poised and sophisticated as she stumbles from one mishap to the next. Why then, does he find it so hard to resist her?

Voices were distracting

What did you like best about this story?

I enjoyed the whole story and had already read it. I bought the audio version to listen to when I couldn't sit down and read.

What didn’t you like about Billie Fulford-Brown’s performance?

I didn't like the different voices. Penelope's American accent sounded over-emphasized and was annoying, Drake sounded too stuffy all the time, and his mother sounded like she was 100 years old.

Narration was aweful, but the story was worth it.

Is there anything you would change about this book?

The narrator does a horrible job, which is really sad, because the story is good.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

It was a cute and easy story. The mother-in-law was insightful.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Billie Fulford-Brown?

Anyone else.

Could you see The Duke's Quandary being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

There are not enough books in the series to warrant a TV series.

Cute okay story, narrator went down hill.

This was a cute story, I liked the heroine enough, however she could have been a bit stronger. I did like her awkwardness it made for some funny moments. As for the hero, he was a bit annoying with the "perfect duchess" comments all the time. There was a couple sex scenes, mildly written, but they were nice.

The story line was okay but it was a bit lacking and could have been better. it was a pretty mindless read, meaning, nothing much to follow along with. If you missed a chapter it was no big deal. There was a lot of dialogue throughout so that was good.

As for the narration... well, it was not very good. I listened to this book directly after the first one of the series which was The Elusive Wife. The narration in that book was great, except for Drake's voice. In that book he sounded like a high pitched whiny female, but he wasn't the main character so who cares right? Well guess what? She didn't change his voice for this book at all. It was awful. It was really hard to get past.

booklover

Book was good but the reader made me feel like I was listening to a cartoon. She did well on all the characters except the 2 main ones.

I had to stop listening

loved the story and I am sure it would have been so better with a different narrator. The narrator made Penelope sound like a valley girl. The woman in this book was clumsy. She is brilliant and in a situaton not of her choosing.

A good story, very well narrated

I enjoyed this story. It was very well narrated. It has a good if predictable storyline with likeable characters. The duke annoyed me a little he was sometimes a little arrogant but overall it was enjoyable.

not for me

I found the story repetitive to the point of tedium. The narrator was competent, but couldn't add anything fresh to the words.

Others might find the story more to their liking.

The Duke's Quandary

Amusing regency story! I really enjoyed reading about an intelligent, socially inept woman finally finding love.

Story ok, narrator terrible

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

The book was ok, nothing special, but not dreadful either.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

The interaction with the sister. Could have been more of that!

Would you be willing to try another one of Billie Fulford-Brown’s performances?

No, I am definitely only giving her another try by accident.

Was The Duke's Quandary worth the listening time?

Since I was doing housework it was ok, I would not read it as a book without being able to do something else simultaneously.

Any additional comments?

There was a review commenting on the duke not recognizing his wife, that was not in this story.
