Publisher's Summary

In the latest from worldwide best seller Camilla Lackberg, a new novel from a reclusive Fjallbacka resident has enraptured the community - but what secrets and tragedies are lurking behind the pages and threatening to come to life?

Christian Thydell's dream has come true. His debut novel, The Mermaid, has been published to rave reviews. So why is he as distant and unhappy as ever?

When crime writer Erica Falck, who helped Christian discover and develop his talents, learns he has been receiving anonymous threats, she investigates not just the messages but also the young author's mysterious past. Then one of Christian's closet friends, Magnus, goes missing.

Erica's husband, Detective Patrik Hedstrom, has his worst suspicions confirmed as the mind games aimed at Christian become a disturbing reality. Christian's group of friends - a "gang of four" from childhood - is a tangled web of relationships, love triangles, and family secrets that Erica and Patrik must unravel in order to discover what really happened to Magnus and who is still threatening Christian.

But with the victims themselves concealing evidence, the investigation is going nowhere. Is their silence driven by fear or guilt? What is the secret they would rather die to protect than live to see revealed?

Should have really been three and a half stars

The story development, as usual, was great. And then...the puzzle gets solved. The explanation was too farfetched. I will definitely read the next Camilla Lackberg. I just hope she gives the mystery a little more thought.

A real puzzler, but...

I enjoyed the psychological ins and outs of this mystery, but in the end I felt manipulated when characters figure things but the reader is left guessing what those details are. Vance is an excellent narrator and I always enjoy his reading. I like the detective and his clever wife and their relationship.
Everything was great until the last paragraph which was just too over the top for me. I won't spoil anything, but I really did not like where I got dropped off - cliff hangers are highly overrated.

Everything about this book was great...until the end. It was so random. What a disappointment!

Goosebumps...

I've never read a book that gave me chills and goosebumps all over my body. I want to find Camilla Lackberg and just stare at her for 15 minutes in complete wonderment and angst over this tale and the ending of this book. Absolutely Fabulous. Completely fulfilled my need for a Thriller. Wow!

Stoopid People, Stoopid Novel, Stoopid Cliffhanger.

I've been on a Scandanavian mystery binge lately and have really enjoyed discovering some great authors. This is not one of them. The women in this novel, especially Ericka, are set up to be SO much smarter than the men, who, to a man are bumbling fools lead around by the nose of their empowered wives and girlfriends. At least two dozen times lead characters didn't answer cell phones leading to unnecessary complications and misunderstandings. Every man, except the Dastardly One, are henpecked idiots. Potential readers should be warned that this novel ends on such a contrived cliffhanger that it beggars belief. Simon Vance is amazing, as always.

Crime on a Mentally suspenseful way

Loved it! I liked every book in this series so far, but this one really made me think. It also evoked more emotions than most crime novels and makes you ponder the fragility of the human spirit.

Dan Budda - try reading the series!!!!!!

Don’t you love it when other reviewers read one part of an entire series and judge them all to be as Dan Buddha claims “ made up of bumbling men, and overbearing women such as Erika. Now anyone who has read these books knows that the author often switches between Erika and Patrick as main characters. Not on,y that, but on,y a buffoon could be,I’ve that Patrick, who has solved some of the most difficult murder cases in this series could ever be an idiot, not to mention henpecked.
This is one series that I string,y recommend be read from the beginning as the two main characters lives DO carry over from book to book. Erika and Patrick have a wonderful, normal marital relationship with the same ups and downs but both are equally adept to investigating and either solving current cases as in Patrick’s case, or writing about past true crimes and often do I g up with additional intricate and sometimes missed information, as written by Erika, the author. This book was like all Camilla’s books; fast past, intelligent, witty and often quite violent.

Suspense and intrigue all the way through!

I am blown away at the amazing writing style, and true suspense throughout the entire story! I enjoy this genre in general, and Camilla Lackberg raises it to a new level. Also, Simon Vance is hands down my favorite narrator! I did a search under his name, which actually led me to this author. A masterful combination!

Who Dunnit ??

Mystery and murder... who could ask for more?
I enjoyed story and especially the narrator. It's easy to forget that one person is bringing the characters to life.
You have to pay attention to the names or it can be a little confusing.
I definitely recommend The Drowning.
