Love at First Mushroom

As a result of the divine spirits' protection, Agnes has an unusual and often embarrassing power: whenever she experiences strong emotions, she makes mushrooms sprout on people! One day, her royal fiancé, who claims to have dragon blood, breaks off his engagement to Agnes, claiming to have found his true soulmate. Her reputation tarnished, Agnes vows to return to commoner life when she's unexpectedly summoned to a ball by her ex-fiancé's cousin: a prince who is far from horrified by her mushrooming him.

"This is fate! I promise you it's no spore-of-the-moment decision! My morels are not questionable! You and I would make the mushiest couple imaginable! Would you marry me?"

Agnes has a lot to deal with: her personal "flaws," an endless onslaught of mushrooms, and the attentions of a prince with a serious fungal fetish. Can Agnes get through this and face up to her true self, or will it all prove just a little too mush?

Loved it

Fun story with some quality comedy. The prince abusing his power was a bit off-putting, but makes sense with the time period the story is based on. All in all, love the story.

The Mushrooms

I did like the story and I'm going to listen to the second. However her denseness really started to get on my nerves.

Sweet

Funny writing and silly situations. Our heroine is likeable, if a little self deprecating. She does make it clear she won’t put up with any BS anymore which I loved.

Richardson does a great narration. Ready to listen to volume 2!

I Wanted To Love It

I thought the beginning was charming and the performance of the narrator really sold me. I enjoyed the introduction of characters, but my feelings changed quickly for the female lead. Misunderstanding comedy can be done well, but this story is not an example of that. Instead of making certain moments laughable, one cant help by irritated by the female lead's ring-around-the-rosies thought process, and I didn't like how she treated the male lead either. He's mostly good to her, but she treats him like a pervert for almost the entirety of the book. How am I supposed to love this character when she has no respect for the male lead and jumps to not-hilarious conclusions at a moment's notice when he says anything. He tries to communicate with her, and she refuses to do so. It's infuriating.

Very enjoyable read and looking forward to Vol 2.

Seeing the title something told me I would enjoy reading this and I was right. Loved Diana Richardsons narration to this book as she really nailed the character's range of emotions especially Anges. I honestly look forward to reading more books from Hanami, while waiting at the bit to listen to Vol. 2 of this book about love and Mushrooms ^^

Willful Misunderstandings, a Light Novel

Premise and puns are cute and the narrator is talented, but this became increasingly painful to listen to as the entire plot of the story is built on miscommunication and our main character being willfully ignorant and jumping to conclusions. The last chapter tries to justify the secrets and poor communication with its “big reveal”, but it just doesn’t work. And unless the author contrives MORE miscommunication, I can’t imagine what the next two books could possibly be about, now that the prince is being honest and the heroine has recognized that she was brainwashed and traumatized the whole time.
The pacing and worldbuilding of the story is also incredibly lacking, which yes, is normal for a light novel, but why are we normalizing poor craft? Having the same information repeated multiple times throughout every chapter also got real tired real quick. Really disappointed because I was hoping this would be a cute, cozy, and magical romcom, but it’s pretty clear the author just wanted an excuse to write about their niche interest in mushrooms. Props to the translator for the wordplay across languages though. Credit where credit is due. And speaking of credits, I want mine back. Never again, light novels, never again.
