This is an epic start to an amazing series for which I have been waiting impatiently…but oh, so worth the wait. Joe, you did it again. I tried so hard to make it last but simply had to listen to it super quick as it was enthralling!

What a satisfying story filled with the best characters I've read in a very long time.

Steven Pacey is as brilliant as ever.

Abercrombie is back!

I was scared it wouldn't live up to The First law. But this is fantastic and equally good. Each character is amazing and the narrator is amazing. In love with the book. The humour is on point as well.

Best audiobook in years

Absolutely love this, Abercrombies best work since The first law trilogy.

He has added variety and depth to the characters with humour added into the mix which is a welcome change from the relentlessly grim tone of previous stories.
Superb reader too.

Neither bad nor great

I loved the first law books. All of them had interesting characters with inspired story arch’s, surprising developments and wit. I was awaiting the devils with the anticipation that I would read something of the same quality… and I didn’t. It‘s a good book, with all the qualities of the first law being there, but shallower. It feels more like a marvel movie, safer, less depth, and more action sprinkled in.

I really wanted to love it, but didn’t.

The characters

Absolutely incredible. At one point got a little repetitive with the flow but still a most epic listen! Steven and Joe strike again !

Great, good, ok,...never bad

is basically a well written and entertaining fictional story form of a D&D campaign. Is great in the characters and world building. is good in the flow of story and the creativity of the challengs faced. is ok in how those challenges are overcome. There are some solutions that are repeated. Never bad. Glad I listened but no compelled to get the sequel

Fantastic action and characterisation

Loved everything, apart from the fact that it had to come to an end. Joe has outdone himself.

Familiar beats in a new setting

As a long time fan of Joe Abercrombie (and Steven Pacey’s performance of his works) this was precisely what I wanted. Familiar but different enough to be fresh. Grim and gritty and full of flawed characters trying and failing to redeem themselves. Plus some twists and surprises as ever. If you’re a fan you won’t find much especially new but if you’re a fan that’ll be just fine. If you’re not a fan, I think you’re missing out on something pretty great.

Steven Pacey is really good!

As always, Steven Pacey did a great job overall, although I didn't fully like one or two of his voice and accent choices.

Kudos to Joe Abercrombie for reading the Zeitgeist accurately; he's really smart and attentive, but there was too much silly humour, and the characters are mostly less interesting than those of The First Law world, so it got a bit boring after a while!
