Design doesn't have to be complicated, which is why this guide to human-centered design shows that usability is just as important as aesthetics.

Even the smartest among us can feel inept as we fail to figure out which light switch or oven burner to turn on, or whether to push, pull, or slide a door. The fault, argues this ingenious - even liberating - audiobook, lies not in ourselves, but in product design that ignores the needs of users and the principles of cognitive psychology. The problems range from ambiguous and hidden controls to arbitrary relationships between controls and functions, coupled with a lack of feedback or other assistance and unreasonable demands on memorization.

The Design of Everyday Things shows that good, usable design is possible. The rules are simple: make things visible, exploit natural relationships that couple function and control, and make intelligent use of constraints. The goal: guide the user effortlessly to the right action on the right control at the right time.

The Design of Everyday Things is a powerful primer on how - and why - some products satisfy customers while others only frustrate them.

Reseñas de la Crítica

"Even classics can be updated and improved.... Highly recommended." (Choice)

"This book changed the field of design. As the pace of technological change accelerates, the principles in this book are increasingly important. The new examples and ideas about design and product development make it essential reading." (Patrick Whitney, dean, Institute of Design, and Steelcase/Robert C. Pew professor of design, Illinois Institute of Technology)

"Twenty-five years ago The Design of Everyday Things was instrumental in orienting my approach to design. With this latest revised and expanded edition, Don Norman has given me a host of new ideas to explore as well as reminding me of the fundamental principles of great and meaningful design. Part operating manual for designers and part manifesto on the power of designing for people, The Design of Everyday Things is even more relevant today than it was when first published." (Tim Brown, CEO, IDEO, and author of Change by Design)

Are you a designer? (of any kind)

If your answer is yes, then you have to read this book.

A must read for every designer

I decided to switch to the other version of this book after one chapter. the narrator is great, but the editing is a bit off. The end of every sentence speeds up a little bit/is weirdly cut off. There isn't the flow to the narration there usually is on an audiobook.

The book is great though!

Bit of a weird narration

Even as a designer, this book gives me a new perspective and angle on design.

For example, a design can change, but the underlying fundamental needs of the user does not.

Approach to Design

I've just started it but it's an easy listen, and the book works well in this format. There are references to images/etc, but not too many and the concepts work as narration. Very useful to be able to multi-task and read it this way. A+

A thought provoking view on the design of everyday things; why do we design technology and expect the humans to accommodate the technology instead of the other way around? The narrator is highly engaging and perfect for this book. The half point deduction is due to the author repeatedly pointing out the differences and updates made in this version compared to his initial book; as a new reader, such elaborations are lost to me and detract from the actual content.

I highly recommend this book to anyone, and not just to designers, analysts, and/or engineers.

Thought provoking - 4.5

One of the Best books that I ever "read", very easy to follow even if a bit technical sometimes. Excellent narration.

Essencial book to understand design around us

I loved this book as it can best be summed up as "Is it me who messed X up?" ..."No, its the engineer and designer who messed X up!"
Really great book and I loved it.

Great book as now I feel no guilt

This was a required reading for a class I’m taking, but it’s well worth getting it “read” as I’m doing chores. Great, clear narrator with a great amount of enthusiasm for the subject matter. Design can be a bit of a dull subject, but how it’s presented and the processes of it will certainly make me question the way things work for years to come.

A great listen if a little on the dry side

I thought this would not work as an audio book but I was wrong.

The content is suitable for this format and when there is a reference to an image we can go to the PDF included. Also the author describe the image and this is narrated to us which means If we cannot open the PDF at the moment we still have a good idea of what it is talking about.

About the content, I'm a software developer, and found it amazing to learn all of this concepts that I see on my day to day but haven't completely given them name and roles to be intentional when adding them.

Very good book.

The clarity of the insight brought forward in this book is incredible. Every chapter invokes thoughts within the reader of ways they can make themselves and the world a better and more functional place. Thank you Don Norman for taking the time necessary to compose this masterpiece!

Practical, precise, and powerful.
