Publisher's summary

A young couple go to Bermuda on their honeymoon. They dive on the reefs offshore, looking for the wreck of a sunken ship. What they find lures them into a strange and increasingly terrifying encounter with past and present, a struggle for salvage and survival along the floor of the sea, in the deep.

Ends abruptly

I loved Jaws so I thought I would like this one just as much. I didn't but Jaws is one of the best books I've ever listened to so this had a lot to live up to. The Deep isn't bad per se but I just had higher hopes for it.

I can't give a good review of the story itself

the narration was absolutely terrible. I couldnt even finish, which is a shame because the story drew me in right away. the narrator was so over the top that the whole story was ruined for me.

Better than Jaws!

Jaws was certainly scary in it's images of a big fish, but this book captured my attention. I tried to listen every chance I got. The writing was good and the narration made it even better. I would recommend this book.

captures your attention

the narrators were great! The book was slow to start and I did almost stop reading it, but just as I was about to put it away the action started and I was hooked! The characters were well developed and the story itself was packed with action, once you get through the beginning

Not great.

I think we will all love Peter Benchley for his iconic work, Jaws, for all time. But this is a mediocre story at best, with a very abrupt and unsatisfying ending. For a forward looking back perspective of someone who did not grow up in the 50s/60s this is an interesting look into what would be considered main stream action in the day. I kept thinking the characters would be perfect in an Old Noire Hollywood movie. They were almost laughably stereotypical. The woman especially. Because they lack depth. If you like Benchley, read this for a peek into his mind, you can see glimmers of his fascination with sharks and the sea at large. Other than that, I'd pass. Oh the voice actor did an awesome job.

Unlikeable, Unrelatable Main Characters

Maybe it's not fair to judge a book based on its characters, but I argue that the sum of a story is directly related to the way each character is portrayed.

The main male protagonist, Sanders, is a selfish fool. He's the typical jerk who is unhappy with his well-paying job and family of wife and children. He only finds enjoyment when his kids are gone and he can scuba dive by himself. He cheats on his wife with someone more than ten years his junior and eventually leaves his wife for the new girl. And the new girl is fine with him being married, like she somehow doesn't think he won't eventually cheat on her too. Idiots all around.

Why is this a big deal to me? Because I'm a happily-married man with two children who literally cannot understand why anyone would willingly give up the role of parenthood to pursue selfish desires. That is the complete opposite of what we teach our children. It's difficult for me to to get engaged with a book or story when the main protagonist is the very person I strive not to be. It would be different if there were character growth, but there is none whatsoever in this book.

Some stories do a very good job of taking an unlikeable, unrelatable main character and making it to where you are still interested in the overall plot. Game of Thones is a good example. Great story, horrendous content. This book, however, falls short. I never grew to like either Sanders or his new trophy-wife, Gail. I think that's what caused me to become indifferent about the outcome of the plot.

Couldn't keep going.

Narration is not good. Overemphasis, almost shouting. Accents are over the top. Story fell flat, perhaps due to the narration.

Not what I thought it would be but better

This was in the horror suspense section. It is not horror but it is so filled with suspense. Such a good book and not my normal style.

The Deep

Let me say that for 33 years I had only seen the movie adaption 1977 ?, and the 2003 or 2004? Adaption
( into the blue ) both movies are pretty good.
It’s really overall a good book, I just got biases over the ending of the book vs the movie/ movies . Benchley did a good job for the most part I like the dog and the twist with coffin and Kevin comes across well and it’s a shame that Benchley rushed the ending of this story and it made for a rushed ending for the movie as well . The Derp is a great treasure story and I have loved it since I was a little boy. Bottom line I gave it 4 stars overall due to the rushed last few chapters, also the narrator is okay and his version of treece is pretty good but some of the other characters is difficult the 1st time around to identify whom is speaking.
If you like the movies and or treasure stories, or sea adventures, I’d say that you probably won’t return this book.
