Resumen del Editor

From the New York Times best-selling author of The Art of Running in Heels comes “a compassionate, poignant, often humorous story of the complicated relationship between a mother and daughter” (Mariah Stewart, New York Times best-selling author) as they attempt to rediscover the past before it disappears forever.

Lou Ann Hunter’s mother has always had a passionate nature, which explains why she’s been married five times and spooned enough male patients to be ousted from three elderly care facilities. She also has Alzheimer’s, which is why she wants to spend the rest of her life surrounded by childhood memories at Sutton Hall, her family’s decrepit plantation home in Louisiana.

Lou Ann, a.k.a. Lulu the Love Guru, has built an empire preaching sex, love, and relationship advice to the women of America - mostly by defying the example her mother has set for her. But with her mom suddenly in need of a full-time caretaker, Lou Ann reluctantly agrees to step out of the spotlight and indulge her mother’s wishes. Upon her arrival at Sutton Hall, Lou Ann discovers that very little functions as it should - least of all her mother’s mind. And as she adjusts to this new and inevitably temporary dynamic with the help of a local handyman and a live-in nurse, she is forced to confront the reality that neither her nor her mother’s future is going according to plan.

“Fans of Sophie Kinsella and Jane Graves will love Rachel Gibson’s How Lulu Lost Her Mind, an endearing, funny, and heart-tugging story from the first page to the last” (Karen Hawkins, New York Times best-selling author).

Excellent story - narration inappropriate for cont

This story was deeper, and heavier than I expected. Dementia is a weighty burden to bear, and the narrator's fluffy, bouncy tone never changed, even when gravitas was required.
The southern male voices are SO cringey, you'll be glad it's mostly women.
Loved the story arc, and the characters.

Comfortable and Enjoyable

I haven’t read this author before. However, I found the story to be a sweet one of mother daughter love. And the lengths the daughter will go to help her mother as her Alzheimer’s progresses. The story is not depressing nor does it seem unrealistic. Just a refreshing tale of the power of love.

A+ narration and story

This was the perfect book to listen to at this moment in my life. All of the characters are believable and I became invested in their plights.
The narrator didn't "read" the book. She told the story.
THANK YOU FOR attributing who wrote the chapter quotes BEFORE reading the quote! I SO wish all authors did this! THANK YOU AGAIN!!!

Meh.

This book calls the engraving on a headstone an epithet and the audiobook pronounces cannula “kuh-NOOLA. It’s jarring and throws me out of the story. I don’t know how that happens for a NY Times Bestselling author besides to wonder if this one isn’t quite good enough for competent editing and proofing? The story is good, the characters are engaging but the 1st person narrator’s internal dialogue came across as whiny, trite and unnecessarily long. Would have been more poignant without her telling us every single thing she felt. She described events with her opinions then went on and explicitly said what emotion accompanied it. The stating of the emotions was unnecessary and weighed down the authenticity of the story, at least for me.

That said, I did laugh out loud several times and the story is worth reading if you have time.

(In case you don’t know—it’s epitaph, not epithet (which means an insult), and cannula is pronounced “KAN-yuh-luh”).

It might make you hungry for Pirate Booty

I found this book hilarious. I had a grandmother with dementia and I found the narrator's voice for Patricia very well done. Coming out with outrageous comments in a flat, deadpan tone reminded me a lot of my gramma, as well as the repetition: equally deadpan on the first telling as on the 100th! Seeing Lou Ann relax and bend to enjoy the challenge of living with someone who has Dementia could bring levity to anyone who knows this task or wonders what it would be like. It was fun to see a northerner struggle to acclimatize to the south -- not in a Schadenfreude way, but just fun. The Cajun French was nice, too.

Best Gibson Book Yet

Great characters, fun story, excellent 'get away' from the stress of taking care of a loved one with Dementia Related issues. In the midst of my own chaos, this book was fun & funny. Thank You, Rachel Gibson & Stephanie Einstein for the joyful escape this book provided.

Great book

Filled with Rachel Gibson's humor and great character interactions. I like the narrator very much and the story line, while sad, is full of humorous characters trying to survive.

It was a sweet story

Not what I expected but I'm glad I read it. I lost my mom to Alzheimer's last year and I thought I'd be able to relate. While everyone's journey is different, most people learn to understand a person in a different light after spending a significant amount of time with an Alzheimer patient.

Narration

The story is good but being from New Orleans I cringe at the "New Orleans accents" . Simon's is absolutely the worst. It was difficult to listen to. The descriptions of how we live is so wrong. It is insulting!

Not what I expected

This isn’t your usual romance novel but I loved the story and was brought to tears T least twice during the book. It was well written and lovely. My only complaint is the Cajun accent but it’s a hard one to do so I’m still giving 4 stars.
