Publisher's Summary

An Amazon Charts bestseller.

In a small town full of secrets, everyone’s a suspect.

When a body is discovered, bled dry on a beach, the sleepy seaside town of Weston-super-Mare wakes up to a nightmare. For Detective Inspector Louise Blackwell, recently transferred to the town she last saw as a child, it’s her first case on the job.

The victim - Veronica Lloyd, an elderly volunteer at a local church - has puncture wounds to her hands. When a priest is found killed in a nearby church in a similarly grisly condition, it becomes clear that Blackwell is dealing with a righteous and bloody murderer. But the victims aren’t random. The killer has a vendetta and is hell-bent on exacting twisted revenge for a dark secret dating back years - and there are more murders planned.

As the body count rises, Blackwell faces a race against time to solve the mystery of the murderer’s identity and put an end to the carnage. She thought she knew Weston, but the town holds more secrets than she’d ever have imagined. Who can she trust and who knows more than they are letting on?

She must discover the crimes that unite the victims - before it’s too late.

Recommend this suspenseful police procedural

A good start for a new British police procedural series about DI Louise Blackwell, who has been ignominiously exiled—by a conniving male boss & a lying colleague—from the Bristol Major Investigation Team to the seaside town of Weston-super-Mare in Somerset. Yes, male detectives stitches up a brilliant female colleague, who doesn’t take her exile well. There are other clichés to be had, but none particularly annoying.

The complex serial killer storyline is intricately plotted, the pace is moderate to fast, and there’s more suspense than I expected. POV characters are DI Blackwell and the murderer, who is named very early on. Yeah, it may be a gimmick, but reading the murderer’s POV works in this book—which is weighted with psychological elements. The plot has good twists, and the denouement is satisfying, whilst remaining true to characterizations of the POV characters.

I enjoyed narrator Danielle Cohen’s voice-acting on the Audible version, so whenever DI Blackwell has her Weltschmerz moments, I switched to Kindle because she sounds whiny. DI Blackwell’s angst-drenched interior monologues become annoying over time. I like smart, tough female protagonists, who can cowgirl-up, with minimal whinging about any sorta feels.

The unforgivable sin...

DI Louise Blackwell has been transferred to the small seaside town of Weston after a bust gone wrong and betrayal by her partner. She gets transferred and he gets a promotion. Louise’s first case is a murder that eerily mimics a crucifixion...when a 2nd body is discovered, the detective begins to connect pieces to a local church, much to the consternation of her superiors. As bodies pile up, Louise is more convinced of the connection, but she is the only one! Will Louise be able to locate a missing retired priest before he becomes the fifth victim of a deranged killer...or will her ex-partner take over the case. Great story! Looking forward to more of DI Blackwell!

Horrendous narration ruined this one

Matt Brolly introduces a new British whodunit series. My second book by Matt Brolly, he continues his suspenseful flair with this small-town murder mystery as detective Louise Blackwell searches for a killer. Narrator Danielle Cohen’s voice is over-the-top and her inflections most annoying; it proves that a poor narrator can ruin a great book. I wish narrator Cohen would read the book. Stop changing voice levels trying to imitate characters. It is quite distracting. Just READ the book. Tell the story. I will be looking for another by Brolly without Cohen.

I wont be listening to this author again. Could pass as plausible plot in the hands of the an experienced author. This dramatic
end -- cue up night, drenching
rain/wind, furious sea. small boat and even more and it is just too much. The characters are so uninteresting I
wish they had all been abandoned to the elements.

First book in series and really enjoyable.

I will be downloading the next in this series. I found the authors first in series a real treat, I always like to read detective series I enjoy Joy Ellis, J L Ross and Rachel Abbots Detective series and this Author I will add to those too. The Narrator Danielle Cohen was excellent too.

It’s okay. Not great.

I wouldn’t have missed out on anything by not listening to this. It’s not appalling (despite a lot of ugly syntax) and given that it’s currently lockdown, it has helped to pass the time. It’s just rather dull, predictable and clichéd. How is it that so much nondescript writing gets published and considered deserving of an audio version?

Serviceable

Nothing to stand out in this one. Neither Louise or her team inspired a great deal of empathy and I found her past problems somewhat irritating. I listened to the whole book and whilst it didn't set the world alight it was a reasonable listen. Unlikely I will go on to the rest of the series.

I couldn't rate the story as the execrable Scottish accent made it impossible to listen.

Decent thriller that got better as it went on.

The first hour or so was a little hard to get into, mainly because it felt like nothing special, but the story improved as you got further into it. It never quite felt amazing though, yet it did paint a nice picture of the area and climate. Due to the fact the story is partly told from the killer's perspective, there wasn't much in the way of a twist ending unfortunately.

Intriguing, steady rolling story

Enjoyed the story immensely. Not a fast paced thriller but held my interest throughout. Found the start a little slow as the main character kept jumping from past to present a lot but the narrator kept me engaged with the different characters voices, they were brilliant. After the first few chapters the story moved along at a steady pace. Would recommend.

Terrific storyline. Some classic themes but fresh and interesting. Occasionally i I would have liked the reader to take a softer tone. But did not spoil the book

Disappointed. Could not get into the story.

Narrator was clear but the tone and accent was distracting particularly at excitable or stressful sections in the book.
