One of the country’s most-acclaimed and popular novelists offers a selection of a dozen short stories set in James Lee Burke’s most beloved milieu, the Deep South.

“America’s best novelist” (The Denver Post), two-time Edgar Award winner James Lee Burke is renowned for his lush, suspense-charged portrayals of the Deep South—the people, the crime, the hope and despair infused in the bayou landscape. This stunning anthology takes us back to where Burke's heart and soul beat—the steamy, seamy Gulf Coast—in complex and fascinating tales that crackle with violence and menace, meshing his flair for gripping storytelling with his urbane writing style.

A couple or so stories in this collection are not typical of Burke's usual plots and characters and they are among his best writing, especially the emotional aspects. He is more talented than I knew and I never doubted his outstanding talent. All the stories are excellent. I didn't know he had this range and I've real more than half of what is still in print.

Talent. Emotional range is wider than realized as are his plot ranges.

What did you like best about The Convict and Other Stories? What did you like least?

I like the full JLB novels better. The short stories were harder to follow. My bookmark was not working well on this audio and kept jumping around.
EXCEPTION: the story "Hack" made me cry. My 94 year old dad recently passed.

I like the full novels better.

Found this to be earlier work, not readable compared with Burke's mature work.Stopped reading after trying three stories and switched to Going After Cacciato, which is terrific. Liked a couple of Burke's more recent works, but can't read them too closely together or I fine a sameness in them.

Didn't finish

reconized a few things shortly used in other books, but this man can tell a story and take me to New Orleans just by opening his book. Where ever he describes that is where I am at. Can't waiit for next book.

Haven't read a a Jee Burke I didn't like
