Publisher's summary

Her father is the king of England.

She is the controversial princess.

Regarded as down to earth by the press and rebellious by the king, Princess Adeline refuses to bow to the royal expectations her title carries. She knows better than anyone that the united front of the royal family is nothing but smoke and mirrors - lies and secrets masked by power and privilege. She wants no part of it, and she will never surrender to the king's demand to marry a man she does not love. But despite Adeline's determination to retain her free will, she remains deeply unfulfilled, feeling caged and suffocated.

That is until she meets Josh Jameson. Drawn in by his confidence, Adeline is soon captivated by the scandalously sexy American actor. His ability to penetrate her defenses overwhelms her - his touch is pure fire, and his allure overpowering. Nothing has ever made her feel so alive in a world where she's otherwise slowly drowning. However, while Josh may be Hollywood royalty, he's not actual royalty, and Adeline knows the king and his advisors will do everything in their power to keep them apart.

But Josh Jameson becomes the princess's ultimate vice.

And although she bows to no one, she bows to him.

NOT A HEA!

This sucked because it does not have a happy ending! This should have been disclosed!

What a whirlwind! Jodi does it again!

I first found Jodi's books when I stumbled across the 'This Man' series, which was one of the first audiobooks I listened to on Audible. Now it's been almost 6 months or so and at least one hundred audiobooks later, yet coming back to this author's books has rekindled something I so rarely come across in romance books: that blend of good writing and narration that immerse you. Her characters feel so unbelievably real, her writing extraordinary, and her audiobooks always seem to have the absolute perfect narrator for them. I was blown out of my seat once again, The Controversial Princess taking me on a wild ride of love, pride, hate, fear, and sadness. That "something" that Jodi is able to provide that is rarely found in books I've come across is the level of immersion that Jodi is somehow able to create for the reader in a way that's so relatable in a completely unrelatable situation. As I found myself becoming invested, my emotions started to be affected. I got angry when Adeline was treated badly, I was happy when she was happy, and I felt pain when she felt pain (sadness of course not actual physical pain). While good writing is the most obvious cause of this, I also believe that part of this is due particularly to paying attention to the important things and having a great narrator. I love how she doesn't go into long, overdrawn details of what the settings look like as to keep the reader/listener engaged, I never did understand why some writers do this. Jodi seemlessly blends equal parts painting a picture of the situation/setting with just enough left untouched that the reader or listener can fill the rest in with their imagination without making it feel like anything was left out either. Also, the characters are likeable and relatable even in such outlandish circumstances. For a writer to make listeners such as myself feel that way, that we are part of this story and are along for the ride, it's something special and Jodi absolutely has it down to a science in her books. She is truly a revelation to the romance novel world. Also, she must have taken great care because although this was a long book, it was in no way boring in the beginning middle or ending in my opinion. It kept me on the edge of my seat throughout and while I had an inkling as to some of the secrets that were going to come to light, it was in no way predictable and the reader/listener is given just enough info to keep them interested and guessing, giving us breadcrumbs until we made our way to the answer. Moving on from the writing, the narrator, Anda, was superb. Her male voice is brilliant, her pronunciation on point, and her inflections impeccable. I was supremely impressed, wondering if she was even naturally British or not. Next, I wanted to address that I have seen some people complain on the reviews, lowering their rating because things left off on a cliffhanger and to that I say that before buying a book, look into it more carefully. Those ratings should be automatically disregarded if you ask me. So here's a warning: buyers beware, this is a two book set so to expect a happy ending at the end of the first book would be just plain silly since there would be nothing left to move on to in the next book. I also wanted to note that it's clear from this book's length that it wasn't split up just to make an extra buck, which I have seen at times on Audible and it is frustrating. The first one is almost 13 hours long and the second 16 or so, so it makes perfect sense to do this and I felt that the way it left off was a perfect segue to the second novel. I get so exasperated reading people's rants about cliffhangers, so here is a warning to expect to spend two credits. And if you can help it, don't skip this one, it's easily worth twice that! I had no real problems with this book, no ideas or suggestions of how things could have been done better, really, and I feel like I'll need to read the second half of the story before making any real judgment calls. I am hoping for a bit more adventurous erotic scenes since the same thing over and over could get tedious but it has not been so far. Lastly, tne thing I considered a few times was that Adeline's age felt like it didn't suit her. Yes she was naive because she was raised sheltered but beyond that, 30 just didn't seem right. I felt that 25 would have been much more fitting. Even so, I understand why the writer made that call and how it clearly highlights the difference between a normal 30 year old and a 30 year old brought up as a princess as well as the mounting pressure to marry and have kids etc. etc. This number has little bearing on the story, it was just something I thought about a few times. Also, it made me ENRAGED when her family and the royal advisors as well as everyone else that treated her so badly were allowed to do so. I understood why Adeline put up with it, but at the same time I wished she would stick up for herself more, and she began to toward the end of the book. I have a feeling she's going to grow and become an even stronger woman in the second book. Everything Jodi did made sense and the complaints I'm talking about here are not reflective of the quality of the story in any way but rather things that really just got on my nerves and under my skjn when I was listening and I suppose that's another reason this book gets you so invested. So overall, it was a 5 star book in every way. Again, it's a two part story so don't expect to spend just one credit and don't buy it if you can't buy two because I can guarantee that if you value stories with romance, passion, and a crazy good plot to boot, you'll be hooked and moving right along to the next one just like I am right now.

This was just an okay book for me

I chose this book because of the author.
I'm always on the lookout for new books written by her . However, the beginning of this book was a serious turn off mostly because I'm not into the bow before me or the kneeling and whipping and all of that especially as the prelude to a relationship.
The rest of the story worked out. The drama at the end, the unexpected news of paternity in the royal family, etc. these help to build the story even though the most interesting parts were at the end.
I continued reading because I've always liked her previous books especially the 'This Man' series .
This book will not be on my read/listen again list But I look forward to the next book in the series.

Hang in there, it becomes so worth it.

I love Ms Malpas’ books, but if I hadn’t bought both audios at once, I would have stopped almost immediately & bought the book. I hated the narration, but she grew on me & I liked her by the end. The book seemed a little slow to start but I believe that was because I disliked the audio so much. It soon became a wonderful book, full of her usual very hot sex and very strong emotional angst with a little mystery thrown in to make a very enjoyable book. You do need to continue to the 2nd book but who wouldn’t want to.

Loved the narrator hated the story.

DNF

The character work was bizarre. Very immature for thirty-somethings. You know that it is not a great story when you agree with the people that are "holding the protagonist back". However, I only lasted as far as I did due to the superb narration.

WOW

well this was something else. I did not expect this ending. It was hard to get into it because of the kinkiness. I don't like all of that and I think it would've been a great story without all of that. That being said there were some very good parts in it. overall I would give it 2 thumbs up.

If you want an AntiRomance with the most vulgar language possible, then this is your book

The language is beyond awful & lack of actual romance is extremely disappointing being that this is in the romance category. As well as not till the last hour of read does this book have an actual plot. I am not a fan of this author!

Disappointed

I purchased this book a while back and just got around to listening to it-I would have returned it if I could have. Honestly, there isn't much story just descriptive sex. I have read and listened to this author before and certainly expected it to be better. I have only listened to a couple hours and not sure I want to listen to any more.

Josh Jameson & Princess Adeline

*****Spoiler Alert*****

Audible review. Book 1 of 2 in the Smoke and Mirrors duet. CLIFFHANGER. Single POV. Narrated in British, Spanish, & average American accents. I listened at speed 1.60. Unnecessary intro and finalé music. The story earns 3 stars if you completely suspend reality, accept it as total fiction, and completely ignore the brutal repeated unnecessary spanking of a woman. Trigger warnings: bound gagged spanking w/hand & belt that are abuse and not at all sexy; closeted married uncle; assassination attempt on a prince killing his horse; helicopter accident killing the king and the heir to the throne; two different affairs leading to 2 children born of infidelity.

Princess Adeline (30) is the youngest of three, with two older brothers. Her father is the king of England. She is constantly rebelling against what is expected of her, refusing to conform to her father's requests. Josh Jameson is an American actor whose Senator stepfather met the king while he was in the military. They're both invited to Adeline's birthday where Josh meets her and then gags, spanks and fingers her in front of her grandfather's statue in the garden maze (highly unlikely but whatever). Adeline comes to her senses realizing what this brash American boy has just done to her and runs from him only to later come to terms with the fact that she loves him and what he does to her. (YUCK!) After an assassination attempt on Edward, Adeline's directly older brother, the king decides that Adeline must marry to distract the public. Trying to buy time to find a way out, Adeline is allowed to take a short 48 hour trip away from the palace but before Josh can get to her the king shows up to help her sort arrangements for her upcoming engagement and wedding. (Completely unbelievable that the king would do that but whatever.) Adeline blows up to the king confessing that she'll never marry the man he wants her to marry, tells him she's in love with Josh, steals one of the vehicles on the grounds, rams through the gate (again, not at all likely), and drives until she talks to Josh to arrange a place to meet. Of course her bodyguard shows up alone and helps her get away to Josh. Once she and Josh have reunited, met with his team to decide on a press release about their relationship, had sex, and slept, they turn to watch the announcement of their relationship on the news only to find that her father and brother died in a helicopter crash and that Josh's publicist went against their request and never issued the press release about their relationship (someone should've been fired but oh well). Adeline returns to the palace to find out that John's wife is pregnant with another man's baby, that the Queen Consort had an affair with one of the king's advisors so Edward was the product of infidelity meaning that Adeline is now going to be the next Queen of England.
