A Tasty Installment
Oh Hale...
This story is a prequel to The Confectioner's Guild and follows Wren's friend Hale and his troubled journey to becoming a guild member. I recommend listening to book 1 first and then the prequel, it's the order I read them in and, to me, it helped me add depth and layer to a character I already knew.
Hale starts out the story as a spoiled rich boy who never had to do any truly hard work in his life. Then political upheaval hits and everything Hale thought was so secure suddenly vanishes. He has to flee the only life he's ever known with little more than his mother, brother, and the clothes on his back.
He grew up in a world where his father's name and title meant everything and ends up on a journey where the only thing that matters are his own actions. This is problematic for Hale at first and he makes sometimes silly and sometimes costly mistakes.
Throughout this story the listener gets to watch Hale grow and mature into the person Wren meets in The Confectioner's Guild. A must-read for fans of that book.

Very Intense story
This book is a prequel to the Confectioners Guild.....
I had already listened to the Confectioners Guild, so this book filled in the background for Hale...
It was a very intense and heart wrenching story, but tells us a lot about where Hale came from.

A stunning adventure
In this novella we watch Hale and his family as they run for freedom during a coup. They travel with an unlikely band of pirates and have many dangerous adventures.
It took me a moment to get into this story because I absolutely despised Hale. He was such a cocky playboy who was whiny and that seemed like he would have no redeeming qualities. But then tragedy strikes and he actually grows into a likeable character. He's headstrong and persistent, as well as having a heart of gold.
All in all, I enjoyed this prequel and can't wait to read the rest of the series.

5 Lucky Stars
Love love loved this! I was so bummed it wasn't longer, though I knew it wasnt a full length novel. I love Hale to pieces. It was fun to have it from his POV. It's especially funny being in his head. And I enjoyed getting to know about his past. If you like Hale you'll love The Confectioners Exile. I read it after book 2, but I think it'd be best after book 1, which is what Luana intended. Could be read at any point and still enjoyed though.
As usual, Ms Navarro did a bang up job! She's wonderful.
Couple Favorite Lines:

Hale's story
This short story helps us get a better idea of what Hale is really like and why he acts the way he does. I enjoyed the interactions between the characters and the adventures they experienced along the way. I was sad when his brother was killed by the raiders and I cheered when he won back his mom with his luck. It explains why he was fit for the confectioners guild using his luck to infuse into the treats. I hope we get to see some of the other characters again in future books. I really enjoyed the narration, she did a great job bringing the characters to life.

Great Addition to the Series
The Confectioner's Exile is a fun excursion in The Confectioner Chronicles.
I enjoyed listening to the audio version of Hale's adventure to the Guild. Well narrated, I was invested in Hale's story even though I knew what would happen eventually. In fact, it gives a lot more insight into the character and enjoyed getting to know him better.
If you enjoyed the first book, you can't skip this one!

I love to hear the back story of characters
Narration was lovely
The story hooked me from the beginning and it was a shame it wasnt a full book. I am hoping in the future there will be more adventures with much more use of the special properties of the foods.
