Publisher's Summary

“If you've been looking for something different to level up your health, fitness, and personal growth, this is it.” (Melissa Urban, Whole30 CEO and New York Times best-selling author)

Discover the evolutionary mind and body benefits of living at the edges of your comfort zone and reconnecting with the wild.

In many ways, we’re more comfortable than ever before. But could our sheltered, temperature-controlled, overfed, underchallenged lives actually be the leading cause of many our most urgent physical and mental health issues? In this gripping investigation, award-winning journalist Michael Easter seeks out off-the-grid visionaries, disruptive genius researchers, and mind-body conditioning trailblazers who are unlocking the life-enhancing secrets of a counterintuitive solution: discomfort.

Easter’s journey to understand our evolutionary need to be challenged takes him to meet the NBA’s top exercise scientist, who uses an ancient Japanese practice to build championship athletes; to the mystical country of Bhutan, where an Oxford economist and Buddhist leader are showing the world what death can teach us about happiness; to the outdoor lab of a young neuroscientist who’s found that nature tests our physical and mental endurance in ways that expand creativity while taming burnout and anxiety; to the remote Alaskan backcountry on a demanding 33-day hunting expedition to experience the rewilding secrets of one of the last rugged places on Earth; and more.

Along the way, Easter uncovers a blueprint for leveraging the power of discomfort that will dramatically improve our health and happiness, and perhaps even help us understand what it means to be human. The Comfort Crisis is a bold call to break out of your comfort zone and explore the wild within yourself.

Critic Reviews

“Changes the way we think about the modern world and how everyday conveniences are eroding our understanding of what it mean to be human.” (Richard Dorment, editor in chief, Men’s Health

“I read The Comfort Crisis in three straight sittings and was so motivated and inspired that I immediately made changes to my daily routines. Two months later, I've never been fitter, more self-confident, or happier. If you've been looking for something different to level up your health, fitness, and personal growth, THIS IS IT.” (Melissa Urban, Whole30 CEO and six-time New York Times best-selling author)

“Entertaining and enlightening, Easter’s quest for a ‘rewilded’ diet, creative boredom, and other sensation - restoring discomforts is chock-full of solid science as well as a rollicking adventure.” (Dan Fagin, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Toms River: A Story of Science and Salvation)

beyond expectations

there's always been this inexplicable feeling whenever I would come home from a big adventure. I've tried forever to explain to people why I go do those crazy things or how it makes me feel. this book is everything I wish I could have said and everything I've been experiencing and exactly why I get out there. this book is beautifully written never mind the great story about his Arctic adventure, and it's all backed up by science. without being boring. I wish I could give this book a 10 and I wish I could give a copy to every person who struggles and can't explain their own anxiety.

Everyone needs to read/listen to this book

I can not say enough how much I have enjoyed this book. I have been recommending it left and right to friends, family and even my patients. I love the connections with the life stories and tie ins with the research. Especially at the end where he gives a link to all the articles he references throughout the book. I’m already going to go through it a second time just to get more out of it from things I am sure I have missed. Just download the book, you won’t regret it!

Have we been living a dream?

I’ve read a lot of books about similar subjects. In the end I usually feel like I’m being sold something unattainable or the quick and easy guide to X and a better Y. The Comfort Crisis on the other-hand strikes a different tone. I didn’t feel like I was being sold anything or promised anything. I felt like I was being shown a memory that I’d forgotten. Something that I already knew but ignored or pretended was out of reach for good due to (insert excuse). I don’t feel that I’m alone in experiencing this kind of nameless yearning that I can’t seem to drown with drink or trinkets. There’s something that I know that I at least am missing that I’ve been conditioned to believe I’m not missing. I thank the author and the amazing people he worked with to make this book come to life. If you’re like me, this book will strike at the essence of your soul. 100% worth the read, the re-read, and the action it’ll inspire you to take. Thank you, Mike!

Best audiobook I have ever listened to!

There is everything worthwhile imaginable to listen to in this book, and not a second is wasting our time when listening to it. Been waiting almost a year for this to be released and it was waaayyy too long of a wait. Part Storytelling and part advice giving, yet they mesh together so well. I have already immediately started implementing the recommendations he gave and my life will be forever changed for the better because of this.

A great book !

This book covers a very wide scope and the author weaves his Article experience seamlessly !
I’ve heard much of the research before but not all of it !! And the research presented here that I haven’t come make this way more than worth the time taken to listen and cost of the book !! Priceless . And the research findings I’ve heard before are soooo important to hear again and again !! We need this stuff drilled into us frequently so we slowly reprogram from the modern comfortable life. We can def enjoy the modern comforts !! But also be aware and challenge ourselves to throw in exciting or even simple non-comforts - I do it almost as a game !! As often as possible :)
Thanks
Charlie

Outstanding lives beyond the comfort zone.

This book was incredible. A fun and perfectly articulated balance of facts, data, history, experiences, and real-life examples. So many bits of information that will impact my life forever. It validates need to stretch our limits and challenge what we may think we are capable of. I've already begun to implement principles and am planning a Misogi in the next year.

Essential information for anyone looking to lead a healthier, happier life

I found the information in this book so incredibly interesting! I especially enjoyed the discussions of all the research which led to the suggested lifestyle enhancements. The author’s own personal adventure woven into the topics made this book really enjoyable to listen to.

Important and inspirational listening

A good book and well read. Maybe a bit long winded at times but overall the message is worth your patience.
The section on diet was the only but that felt a little bit cherry picked, and over simplified, but otherwise, he highlights many many good examples of why comfort may not be healthy in the long run.

Fascinating

I am a big fan of David Goggins' "Can't Hurt Me", Adam Sinicki's "Superfunctional Training" and Bioneer Youtube channel, and James Clear's "Atomic Habits". This book contains elements that you find in all of those regarding lifestyle, fitness, etc. If you like any of those then you will appreciate this book.

Simple common sense advice

This book made so much sense and all its claims have research backing them.

Really made me think what in modern life is responsible for my physical and mental health and this book gives very practical and easy to do ideas on how to improve them.

Everyone will get something out of this

The parallel story telling of Michaels first hand experiences in Alaska combined with research backed monologues made for an exceptionally thought entertaining book.

This book challenges a lot of the defaults of everyday life and does a great job of breaking down common misconceptions about health, exercise and the mind in the modern world.
If you like the hard truth on things and aren’t afraid to cop a bit on the chin, you’ll love this book. And if you don’t, you should also listen because either way it will challenge the way you think.
I’ve found the book has helped me rekindle my appreciation for nature that was lost over my time at university. The book has helped me further align some values and challenged others in the way I think has been exceptionally important as I graduate and think about the future.
Highly recommend.

Must read

This book was not what I expected. I really enjoyed it, sometimes the writer can get a bit intense with the drama but not enough to rune it. It's touches on some great health and well being facts in a world filled with information pollution, debunking some widely accepted "facts", like processed food is bad for you, the writer points out, with help from a specialist, that most foods are processed and there's a lot more to it than this "matter of fact" rule.
