Publisher's summary

It's hard to live when you think you deserve to die....

When a tired old inmate is found dead in his cell, the prison is obligated to investigate and so DI Barton attends. The men he interviews have been convicted of some of the worst things a human being can do, but it appears likely that the death was due to natural causes.

When the house of the dead man is burgled and that crime is followed by a suspicious fire, Barton desperately needs to speak to his widow, but she’s nowhere to be found.

In the space of 24 hours, everyone he wants to talk to has vanished. Then he receives some post, which makes him believe he could be the next to disappear.

Barton’s investigation goes full circle, through a series of brutal murders, back to the prison, and all signs are pointing to the fact that he’s made a terrible mistake.

There’s a violent killer on the loose who wants everyone to learn that some people deserve to die.

DI Barton is back as Ross Greenwood continues with his best-selling series, perfect for fans of Mark Billingham and Ian Rankin.

Critic reviews

"Move over Rebus and Morse; a new entry has joined the list of great crime investigators in the form of Detective Inspector John Barton. A rich cast of characters and an explosive plot kept me turning the pages until the final dramatic twist." (Richard Burke)

"Master of the psychological thriller genre Ross Greenwood once again proves his talent for creating engrossing and gritty novels that draw you right in and won’t let go until you’ve reached the shocking ending." (Caroline Vincent, BitsAboutBooks)

"Ross Greenwood doesn’t write clichés. What he has written here is a fast-paced, action-filled puzzle with believable characters that's spiced with a lot of humour." (Kath Middleton)

great reader, in this latest one, at some point, you're rooting for both sides to win! I liked the end as it came to it.

DI Barton does it again

I do hope that we will have more in this series - more than the usual twist at the end AND a possible trailer?

Lots of little twists

Love Greenwood & this story was next level great. Little side stories that added so much richness to the book.

Another great listen

I have really enjoyed the DI Barton detective series. I need to start paying closer attention to seemingly insignificant details as I’m listening, because they always come back at the end as part of a major plot twist. David Thorpe does a fabulous job with the narration as usual!

A great twist

At first I didn’t like this one as much as the others in the series because I am not a huge fan of stories set in prisons, but in the end the ingenious plot drew me in and I even found myself routing for the “Cold Killer.” I thought I had guessed whodunnit by halfway through, only to discover that I was only partially right. As usual, I adored the narration. David Thorpe gives convincing and nuanced voices to each character, so it is very easy to know who is speaking. Along with Angus King and Andy Serkis, he has become one of my favorite Audible narrators. I can’t wait for the next instalment of the series.

Wow!

There was a lot going on in this installment of the series, and I’m here for it! Ross Greenwood is a master at drawing the reader in and making us think we know what is going on, but then there’s a twist that turns everything on it’s head! I was drawn into this story, from each perspective, and thoroughly enjoyed it. I love that DI Barton has a healthy marriage and a realistic and relatable home life, in addition to his skillful detecting in his career. Looking forward to more!

Thoroughly enjoyable

Love DI Barton and his team. Enjoy the fact that they don’t always get everything right. Looking forward to some more of their ‘adventures’

D.I. Barton Series

I really enjoyed the home life of the police officers. Some have "normal" lives, some have lost a child, some a parent, a pregnancy, a partner...just regular people that have to obey the laws and bring down the bad guys; of course some are bad girls. I have listened to all four D.I. Barton books and enjoyed the writing of Ross Greenwood very much!
I also enjoy listening to David Thorpe as he narrates the voices of all four books!

highly recommended

this series is my first murder mystery genre. I'm very pleased! it captivated me and I was invested in the characters immediately. the first 2 books were free and I was happy to purchase the third. the narration is wonderful. I don't know how he kept all the people separated and gave them their own voices. thanks!!
