Publisher's Summary

The sacred cat of Bubastes has accidentally been slain; now young Chebron must pay for the offense with his own life, as this is the law of the Pagans in Egypt, 1250 BC. Chebron, the son of a high Egyptian priest, flees for his life taking his sister Mysa, one of the household slaves, Amuba, and several companions with him. They escape through closely guarded Egyptian exits only to find themselves in unfamiliar and dangerous lands inhabited by a very different culture of people. Along the way, the roving band of refugees encounters and befriends a Hebrew girl, who exposes them to very strange ideas including the worship of "one true God".

This arduous journey through time, customs and religion provides an adventurous and accurate insight into the ancient people of Egyptian history.

Hard to Understand

This rendition was hard to listen to. We bought a Jim Hodges narration instead. Much better.

Avid reader

This is a good book. A long book with a nice ending. Well worth listening to. I drive up and down the M1 (UK) to Warrington each week and listen to a lot of books from Audible. Some good, some bad, but this made the journey quite short and interesting. I hope you enjoy it too!

Good lesson in Philosophy

This is a good listen. Though not an exciting read, it is enlightening, and mindful. Highly recommends this book for the wisdom in the message of the story.

Audio Review Only

Having so much enjoyed a previous audible in the same genre (Henty's "The Lion St. Mark's"), I was really looking forward to a second pleasant experience. I can't say how I feel about this book, only about the narration. It bothered me so much that after about an hour of listening, the patterned speech and accent of the narrator became so irritating to me that I couldn't continue.

A beautiful way to absorb fascinating history...

While at first I found it hard to focus, this book grabbed me and did not let go! I have visited Egypt several times, been a docent at a huge Egyptian exhibit...but this book gave me something I did not have before: an outsiders view of the daily life of the ancient Egyptians. The main character is an educated young man from a neighboring country who is captured by the Egyptian army when his kingdom is overrun. Via his travels and experiences you gain an incredible view of daily life in Egypt. With a happy ending to boot!

Worthwhile

The narrator's tone and style was stilted and difficult to listen to at first, i almost didn't continue past the first 10 minutes. But eventually I got used to it (even if I didn't care for it), and the historical storyline and character development were worth sticking around for. I enjoyed the book.
