Fantastic story

This Sherlock Holmes adventure by Ken Courtenay is a diabolically clever murder mystery that only the world’s greatest consulting detective can solve. The story is riveting and the characters and dialogue are well written. I highly recommend the book. The narration by Kevin E Green is outstanding. His creates unique voices and accents for the multitude of character and his performance brings them and the story to life.

A Pastiche Worthy of the Canon

An audiobook lives or dies on the voice of its narrator. I began listening in hopes of being lulled to sleep, but that did not happen. Green’s narration of The Case of the Man Who Died Twice breathes life into the characters and the story, making the listen quite compelling. His delivery is clear no matter the character, and his British accent never detracts from comprehension. Bravo!

The story opens with Dr. Watson feeling dispirited at being called to act as the attending physician at the execution of Paul Watts, a man convicted of murder and sentenced to hang. As is his wont, Holmes deduces the cause of his friend’s despair, adding the interesting fact that a person convicted of murder (or any other capital crime) saw three Sundays pass between sentencing and execution. It was a Victorian‑era rule that allowed new evidence to come to light and gave the condemned time to make peace with God.

By 1894, executions had been moved from the public square onto prison grounds. The execution of Simon Rhoads was scheduled for October 31—All Hallows’ Eve—creating an even more boisterous carnival atmosphere outside Newgate Prison than usual. Watson was forced to leave the comfort of his cab some two blocks from his destination, and navigating the crowd proved difficult and unnerving.

Simon Rhoads stood accused of murdering Paul Watts, was arrested, tried, convicted, and hanged—yet some eighteen months later, Paul Watts’s body is found near the London docks. How utterly embarrassing for Scotland Yard—embarrassing enough to keep it from the press and to call in Mycroft Holmes.

Ken Courtney touches all the bases with the inclusion of both Inspector Gregson and Inspector Lestrade, who figure into the web of cases both directly and tangentially. The ever‑solicitous Mrs. Hudson remains the steady mistress of 221B Baker Street. While Courtney occasionally lingers longer than necessary on descriptive detail, the tendency feels at home in the Victorian atmosphere and never diminishes the pleasure of the mystery.

The Case of the Man Who Died Twice surely merits top prizes for presenting a convoluted and tangled skein of deceit, murder, and mayhem. Of course, in the end, Mr. Sherlock Holmes unsnarls it all into a coherent set of events.

Great book very well done. Love the book how it draws you in to listening more and more. Very well narrated and written. Definitely recommend this book.

The Case of the Man Who Died Twice by Ken Courtenay is an excellent Sherlock Holmes Adventure fiction. Kevin E. Green did a wonderful job with the narration. The story is entertaining, interesting, enjoyable, exciting, well written, and more.
