Lieutenant Jonathan Stride is quietly recovering from injuries sustained on his latest case when a rich doctor's baby is kidnapped and his peace is shattered. As suspicion builds that the doctor may have staged the baby’s disappearance, the relationship between the doctor and his wife and neighbors begins to disintegrate. Stride and his lover, Serena, a former Las Vegas detective, find themselves on opposite sides of the case, with Stride pursuing evidence that incriminates the doctor and Serena trying to prove that the baby really was abducted.
Meanwhile, Stride’s partner, Maggie, and a headstrong young cop are tracking a man responsible for a violent crime wave in the rural areas of Duluth. There seems to be no connection between the cases—until a victim with ties to the doctor’s case turns up murdered in the signature style of the Duluth killer.
Brian Freeman is an international best-selling author of psychological suspense novels, including Immoral and Stripped.

Mr. Barrett did a fine job with the narration. We listen to his voice but he was never obvious or intrusive upon the story. We could get involved in the story and forget that it was being read to us. A superb job.
Nothing was predictable

Okay, let me say, I loved the mystery in this book very much. BUT I HATED the main characters choices and actions. Stride who is in love with Serena and has found a true love connection since the passing of his wife. He is struggling with PTSD since his accident in the last book, this causes him to shut down and cause some distance between them. He won't talk to her or confide in her, or even get intimate. Yet, when his partner Maggie finds him after a panic attack, they end up sleeping together!! UGH, this just irritated me, as he has never shown interest in Maggie, yet she has always had feelings for him. She is even friends with Serena, so this was double betrayal. Now, I know this happens, but it is not in the character that has been painted with Stride, so I had a hard time with it. Then when Serena finds out, he doesn't fight for them, he lets her walk out of his life. Again, not the person he is. Naturally, this didn't set well at all with me.
As for the story line, it was great. I truly thought I had it all figured out when it was all turned upside down and blew me away! I enjoy the tails Brian Freeman spins and the way he gives his clues, not giving away too much too soon.
Another great Stride Mystery

I love Tier One, Grey Man, Terminal list, Scott Havrath etc…. This series is different. It is easier to process world plots & terrorism than to accept the scum that lives among us and the messiness of life.
I have read the first five books and have to take a humanity break. Constant neighborhood horrors and personal drama, wears me out.
I sometimes feel like there is a liberal personal agenda in the plot and the books walk a fine line of character development versus stereotyping.
I will finish the series, but I wouldn’t recommend it to my husband and I would be cautious who I recommended it to.
Finally the narrator….. he reads the main story well but I really dislike his individual character voices. The women sound flip, flamboyant, or sluggish.
That being said, the storylines are complex, twisted, disturbing, and violent. The violence feels more personal than the thrillers I mentioned above…. Maybe because this could happen in a city near you?
Stories are a thriller - soap opera
