When 17-year-old Katy Swartz moved to West Virginia right before her senior year, she'd pretty much resigned herself to thick accents, dodgy Internet access, and a whole lot of boring, but then she spotted her hot neighbor, with his looming height and eerie green eyes. Things were looking up...until he opened his mouth. Daemon Black is infuriating. Arrogant. Stab-worthy. It's hate at first sight, but when a stranger attacks her and Daemon literally freezes time with a wave of his hand, well, something...unexpected happens. The hot guy next door? Well, he's an alien.

I knew the moment Katy Swartz moved in next door there was going to be trouble. Lots of it. And trouble's the last thing I need, since I'm not exactly from around here. My people arrived on Earth from Lux, a planet 13 billion light-years away. Plus, if there's one thing I know, it's that humans can't be trusted. We scare them. We can do things they only dream about, and honestly, we make them look weak as hell. Cuz they are.

The Hematoi descend from the unions of gods and mortals, and the children of two Hematoi-pure-bloods-have godlike powers. Children of Hematoi and mortals-well, not so much. Half-bloods only have two options: Become trained Sentinels who hunt and kill daimons or become servants in the homes of the pures. Seventeen-year-old Alexandria would rather risk her life fighting than waste it scrubbing toilets, but she may end up slumming it anyway.

Being destined to become some kind of supernatural electrical outlet isn't exactly awesome - especially when Alexandria's "other half" is everywhere she goes. Seth's in her training room, outside her classes, and keeps showing up in her bedroom - so not cool. Their connection does have some benefits, like staving off her nightmares of the tragic showdown with her mother, but it has no effect on what Alex feels for the forbidden, pure-blooded Aiden. Or what he will do - and sacrifice - for her.

Alexandria isn’t sure she’s going to make it to her 18th birthday - to her Awakening. A long-forgotten, fanatical order is out to kill her, and if the Council ever discovers what she did in the Catskills, she’s a goner...and so is Aiden. If that’s not freaky enough, whenever Alex and Seth spend time "training" - which really is just Seth's code word for some up-close and personal one-on-one time - she ends up with another mark of the Apollyon, which brings her one step closer to Awakening ahead of schedule. Awesome.

Publisher's Summary
Number one New York Times, USA Today, and internationally best-selling author Jennifer L. Armentrout returns to the world of the Lux with The Burning Shadow, the steamy, shocking second installment of the Origin series that will leave listeners reeling.
When Evelyn Dasher crossed paths with Luc, she was thrown headfirst into the world of the Lux - only to discover she was already far more involved in their world than she ever suspected.
Because the Luxen aren’t the only ones with a hidden past. There’s a gap in Evie’s memory, lost months of her life and a lingering sense that something happened, something she can’t remember and nobody is willing to tell her. She needs to find out the truth about who she is - and who she was. But every answer she finds only brings up more questions.
Her search for the truth brings her ever closer to Luc, the Origin at the center of it all. He’s powerful, arrogant, inhumanly beautiful, extremely dangerous...and possibly in love with her. But even as Evie falls for him, she can’t help but wonder if his attraction is to her or to the memory of a girl who no longer exists.
And all the while, a new threat looms: reports of a flu-like, fatal virus that the government insists is being spread by Luxen. A horrifying illness that changes whoever it touches, spreading panic across a country already at its breaking point.

The Burning Shadow
Ok wow, so much happens in this book in all the good ways. We really get to the meat of what is going on and how Evie. This whole book was jam-packed with action. I found the darkest star left us with sooooo many unanswered questions and this book gives them all to us but also leaves us wanting MORE. I loved the romance happening between Luc and Evie you can see genuine affection from both even though Evie questions herself a lot Luc never does it really is a great story. The narration was PHENOMENAL!

A little disappointing......
**Conatins spoilers** I guess I went into this thinking it was going to be another great series like Lux (my favorite series) but sadly, very sadly I was greatly disappointed. I wanted to love it because of Luc but there was way too much of Evie's/Nadia thought process I wanted to scream and it was repetitive. I almost stopped listening to it but pressed on no matter how bored I got. There were more than several fantastic moments though with Daemon, his brother, Asher and at the end Evie met Kat and the whole gang! That made my day! Some cussing, very little violence and not enough intimate moments between Luc and Evie! I know, sad, right??!! They had one night of serious messing around but didn't have sex. Then there was a very sad moment with Kent.... enough said (I stinkin actually cried!). You know there will be a 3rd book but honestly, I've lost interest.

Great book!
I haven’t read a book by Jennifer Armentrout that I didn’t love. I absolutely loved the Lux series (read it once and then listened to the audiobooks). It’s so good to read about an older Luc and to have all of my favorite other characters make an appearance in this series. Can’t wait to find out what happens to Luc and Evie/Nadia in the next book.

Great srory. Exceptional Narratipn
I find Jennifer's books tragic and intense. So much ao I think I will choose a very superficial and fun story for my next read! I greatly enjoyed revisiting the unique and imaginative Lux universe and catching up with our dear friends - they are woven into tbe story in fun ways but this is Luc and Peaches story and it is totally gripping. Saskia's narration is superior - one of those rare situations where I wanted to race back to the audiobook in preference to reading.

Read It
Ugh! Another cliffhanger and now I have to wait until December for the next one to come out! Jennifer wrote another adrenaline ridden book. Luc and Evie Are to amazing main characters in the series. They both are very likable and they have awesome sidekicks as friends. What I really like about Jennifer’s books is that if it takes a few months for her new book to come in, she reviews enough to help you remember what happened in the previous book. You don’t even have to read the first book, but it is recommended. I don’t want to go into much detail because I don’t wanna give anything away, but there are so many twists and turns, and a few shocking deaths, to make this a thriller. Saskia did an excellent job performing this book.

Jennifer L Armentrout became my favorite author because of this series. This is the 2nd book in the series and it is as riveting as The Darkest Star. Luc is an incredible book boyfriend, written with a sense of humor and a dark side that is sure to intrigue you. The characters are well rounded, you are bound to be curious about the side characters too! Beautifully written and artfully narrated.

Lots of reveals for Evie
This book 2 of the Origin series and I’ve been listening to the audible version on my daily walks. The narrator Saskia Maarleveld did a wonderful job again bringing Evie to life and changing her voice for the male characters. You almost forget it’s only one female narrating. The story picks up exactly where we left off in book one with grilled cheese lol - this made me go and make myself some 🤣🤣 This story focuses on a strange flu like virus spreading and making the humans really sick or turn into something not human. (Given we are living in a COVID world it’s rather creepy) Of course the government are trying to blame the Luxen. This of course is in addition to strange deaths where the bodies looked to have scorch marks from a Luxen attack so things are not looking good for them. While this virus and hate is spreading, we get some HUGE reveals about Evie. I can’t put them into words without giving spoilers but it’s something I had suspected or maybe hoped and it happened. Throughout the journey Luc and Evie are getting closer and that’s nice to see but I’m finding it a little bit of slow burn lol. Still doesn’t take away from the overall enjoyment that’s just me being impatient. Straight onto book 2 for me 4/5

Not a Lux Series
Issue with my expectations I guess the story was no where as good as the Lux Series. But an ok read if you want to continue reading about Luxens, Origins and Arams
