Forensic detective Lincoln Rhyme is back with his most harrowing case yet in this newest installment of Jeffrey Deaver's New York Times best-selling series.

A businessman snatched from an Upper East Side street in broad daylight. A miniature hangman's noose left at the scene. A nine-year-old girl, the only witness to the crime. With a crime scene this puzzling, forensic expertise of the highest order is absolutely essential.

Lincoln Rhyme and Amelia Sachs are called in to investigate. Soon the case takes a stranger turn: A recording surfaces of the victim being slowly hanged, his desperate gasps the backdrop to an eerie piece of music. The video is marked as the work of The Composer...

Despite their best efforts, the suspect gets away. So when a similar kidnapping occurs on a dusty road outside Naples, Italy, Rhyme and Sachs don't hesitate to rejoin the hunt. But the search is now a complex case of international cooperation - and not all those involved may be who they seem. Sachs and Rhyme find themselves playing a dangerous game, with lives all across the globe hanging in the balance.

Enjoyed the different setting for this story and a glimpse into Italy and Italian law enforcement.

Fun Italian Flare

A good episode in the Rhyme series. Not a great story, but the setting made up for the lack of a true villain in the story. The performance was top notch and getting all the Italian correct was impressive.

Deaver outdid himself in this fine story. I loved everything about it. The author cranked up his wonderful writing technique at least one notch. Exceptionally well done! The narrator did a fantastic job with Italian phrases and accents! Bravo!

I've always been a fan of Deaver. This book was a good, quick read. Not the best in the series but entertaining.

What made the experience of listening to The Burial Hour the most enjoyable?

I loved the switch to Italy. The descriptions of the area made it more interesting.

What about Edoardo Ballerini’s performance did you like?

At first I was thrown off by the narrators Lincoln Rymes voice, narrators can make or break an audio book for me. But I stuck it through and loved his accent and use of Italian expressions, etc. Flash back to growing up in an Italian American home in NYC.

Any additional comments?

I think Jeffery Deaver is becoming my favorite author. I can always relate to things in his books. I haven't looked his bio up, but I bet he grew up in NYC like I did.

Loved the Italian cast. The story was a bit over the top but in the end I liked it and finished it in one day. I felt like the old Deaver is back! I quit listening to his books a while back but took a chance on this one. So glad I did

Fun to listen to

Jeffrey Deaver never fails to build complicated stories. The twists and turn will keep you guessing until the very end. Kudos to the narrator for switching languages and pronunciations with grace & speed, convincing me that he must be fluid in many languages. Totally enjoyable listen without lurid sex and graphic gore. Highly recommend.

Love these stories

An entertaining read, if a touch slow to start... I enjoyed the fugitive in flight angle, and the friction between national jurisdictions.... Typically fascinating science, and the expected WTF twists... Had more of a pastoral feel in mood, as well as in setting... Last third or so of the book moves quickly with constant head jerking to keep sights on what's actually going on... Great characters as usual, and hoping to see Hercules, Dante`, and Stefan in future books... Some political aspects that those intransigent in viewpoints will likely bristle over, but felt they were presented evenly and fairly... Narration is absolutely excellent...

I was impressed with all the twist and turns. I hope Jeffery Deaver perused the Dragonfly Gargoyle theory.
