Publisher's Summary

Cyrene Strohm is a Queen's Affiliate, a high-ranking official of the court of Byern, with power and privilege to spare. But she's also a keeper of dangerous secrets: like the fact that she holds the heart of the King, and that she possesses magic in a world where magic no longer exists. Determined to discover what this means and how to use her newfound abilities, Cyrene sets off for the distant land of Eleysia, an island nation where Affiliates are strictly forbidden from entering. But the journey is perilous, and the destination may mean utter ruin, as Cyrene comes to learn that everything she's been told her whole life - about her court, her homeland, and even herself - are bound in a beautiful lie.

Excellent portions

Great story. A strong female character in an interesting world occasionally looses all her strength and common sense in an effort to keeep things moving along. I hate her loss of herself to move the plot from one stage to the next. Her inner dialogue during these portions are whiny and the narration, 😔, makes it sooo much worse. I do 💕 💕 this world. This had the potential to be an epic fantasy fiction. It is a decent one. There are just some lacking pieces to that puzzle. A main piece is the narration. It truly will make or break a story. I also didn’t like the lack of distinction between the male characters. When a story contains so many characters, a skilled narrator is required to allow the story to thrive.

good-ish

This narrator is not horrible but is annoying. She's got 3 ranges: male, female, simpering. Overall aggravating.
The series is good enough that I can usually get through the narrator but have to take frequent breaks.

Patience pays off

My review of the first book suggests the need for patience and this proves its worth. As the story picks up pace, I was left breathless at the end. Can’t wait to start the next one.
Narration was great!
Loved the inserts of other character stories. Loved how tangled and thick things are getting.
