THE RETURN OF FIN MACLEOD, PETER MAY'S MUCH-LOVED HERO OF THE INTERNATIONAL BESTSELLING LEWIS TRILOGY.

A MURDER

The body of eighteen-year-old TV personality Caitlin is found abandoned on a remote beach at the head of An Loch Dubh - the Black Loch - on the west coast of the Isle of Lewis. A swimmer and canoeist, it is inconceivable that she could have drowned.

A SECRET

Fin Macleod left the island ten years earlier to escape its memories. When he learns that his married son Fionnlagh had been having a clandestine affair with the dead girl and is suspected of her murder, he and Marsaili return to try and clear his name.

A RECKONING

But nothing is as it seems, and the truth of the murder lies in a past that Fin would rather forget, and a tragedy at the cages of a salmon farm on East Loch Roag, where the tense climax of the story finds its resolution.

The Black Loch takes us on a journey through family ties, hidden relationships and unforgiving landscapes, where suspense, violent revenge and revelation converge in the shadow of the Black Loch.©2024 Peter May (P)2024 Penguin Audio

Initially I set this aside because the Gaelic brogue was difficult to understand; then I changed the speed from 2.5x to 1.0x and it was immediately intelligible. I restarted The Black Loch and found it to be a well crafted, entertaining mystery.

A well crafted, entertaining mystery

Intricately woven story whose plot and characters seemed to become part of the reader’s family. There was a deep sadness that enveloped the central characters & events-a palpable sadness that lingered until the end & perhaps didn’t quite resolve. As the story progressed toward its traumatic events as it approached closure, I nearly wanted to run & find a boat to assist in Finn’s rescue! He literally worked his way into my life, along with other characters-was he real? Is this a fictional story? I am not often struck this emotionally by “murder mysteries” but this story was different. I knew & know these characters. We all do. And that is how a wonderfully created & written story should be.

The narration was the best I’ve heard & added the dimension of sitting in the living room having a discussion with an old friend as he relates his experiences with people & friends we have in common.

Characters became “family”. Exquisite narration.

I was just recently introduced to the Lewis Trilogy and “read” each book voraciously, one after the other. The combination of “the Peter’s”, author and narrator, is brilliant. As good as the book is the conversation between author and narrator at the end of the recording. What chemistry they have. So sorry the series is at an end.

Another un-put-down-able Peter May story

This book is just in time for me. It was like getting a catch up letter about long time friends.. I'm going back and re-reading the three previous Lewis books. It's a wonderful series I recommend the Lewis series to my reader friends. I will say I recommend all Peter May books.

Excellent read

Loved everything about The Black Loch but sadly I would have to reread or listen for the 4th time to once more visit May’s world.

Amazing writing and narration

Loved the whole package. Just wanted to hop onto a plane n go to Lewis.

All the characters. What length you would go to to save your family.

Love the author, great dialogue writer.
I enjoyed the whole series but I was turned off by the interview at the end. Author and narrator have an interesting discussion that surprisingly turns to US politics. Why??? I read fiction because I want to escape reality, I don’t need to hear the narrator’s opinion on US politics.

Great writing

Loved the story but like many, lots of drawn out drama but too short follow up/ending. I also liked the interview at the end but it shouldn't have been included in the time remaining in the final chapter..it should have been a prologue

Great follow up book

There was nothing at all in this entire audiobook which I could fault. Entirely superb. Thank you!

the conversation at the end, between the author and the reader, was superbly entertaining.

The story telling in this book transported me right back to the Isle of Lewis. There wasn’t a beat skipped even though it had been over a decade since we saw Finn. The only critical thing I would say is that the mystery wasn’t really that much of a mystery. I would have like to see more development of some of the other story lines weaved in but it is written so well that I was completely satisfied. I’m sad it is over!

Fantastic way to follow up a phenomenal trilogy
