Great story but troubling

Story ends well but a lot of sadness and man's inhumanity to man and emotional pain.

Stunning work

I’ve listened to hundreds of books. This ranks as one of the best. Incredibly atmospheric. Wonderful character development and a cracking good who done it. What more could you ask for? Can’t wait to dive into more by this author.

fabulous. I was in Scotland for about five weeks this year and it was so wonderful to listen to a narrator that was Scottish.

Compelling mystery, family saga

Very enjoyable. Not crazy about bird killing but skipped through and loved the book as a whole

A wonderful surprise!

I don't remember selecting this book. I probably picked it up on sale. So glad I did. What a gem.

I know this is categorized as "Modern Detective", but I'd say it would be more aptly described as a great fiction with some detecting thrown in. Even though it's not the most uplifting story, I thoroughly enjoyed immersing myself in life on the Scottish Isle. I found that I could easily visualize characters and landscape based on the author's descriptions.

As for the narration, couldn't be better. I'd definitely listen to Peter Forbes again, he's terrific!

I was hooked in the opening chapter

Loved it from beginning to end. I enjoy reading novels set in other cultures and love a good murder mystery. This book also did a good job with exploring characters and going back into their childhood. There were a couple nice twist and turns too. Read it.

MUST READ

Brilliant story telling. Rather basic murder mystery... even a bit predictable- BUT WHAT A JOURNEY! The crime is secondary. the lives and stories told the characters, including their island home and traditions.... absolutely wonderful. gotta go- more Peter May to "read"

Narration is INCREDIBLE as well. full marks all around!!

Desolation and deception.

I did not enjoy the cruelty to the birds. I like the author’s detail of the countryside. The alcohol and abuse of children and women, very sad.

Gripping novel beautifully narrated

I loved this. It was recommended to me by a friend and I fancied the audio book rather than reading and am glad I did. The narration is perfect. At times I wanted more about the crime as it engaged so much with the back story but it really worked. I can't wait to listen to the next in the series.

Captivating

A treat of a story that gives the reader a view into life on the isle of Lewis, and the complex childhood relationships entwined in a murder investigation. Extremely well narrated!
