Publisher's summary

Philanthropist. Humanitarian. Soldier. Spy.

Jared Colter, the head of Torus Intercession, has a secret life he left behind, one that only his closest confidants know about. Normally, the past keeps its secrets, but not this time. Old ghosts come calling to the very doorstep of his new life, when Owen Moss, the person closest to him, goes missing. A carrot left dangling to lure Jared out and into the hands of an unknown enemy.

Owen Moss was once a scared, orphaned boy saved by Jared, but he’s no longer a child even if Jared is having trouble seeing him that way. He’s 32 now, in love with Jared, and as Jared’s obliviousness keeps butting up against Owen’s desire, the tension between them keeps escalating. Something has to give, and soon.

With a bounty on his head, Jared races through the brutal underworld of Southeast Asia, in search of Owen. It’s a maze of treachery and murder, where one false move means death. The answer is tied to the man Jared used to be, taking him into the heart of the lion’s den, where he’s forced to face the darkest questions about himself to save the man he loves.

Good story. Good narration.

This was a nice addition to the Torus series. Jared and Owen's story has been a long time in the making. I liked the ebb and flow of action that was interspersed with romance. If you are looking for an age gap romance, this will suit your interests. I would have liked a bit more focus on what made Owen and Jared connect besides the fact that Jared saved Owen from difficult situations.

Overall an entertaining read/listen with another good performance by the narrator Nick J Russo.

enjoyed it

📖 Story comment: good pace, likeable characters, entertaining story.
This feels like a book that could wrap up this series. I enjoyed Jared and Owen's story, and Jared's complete obliviousness. I liked the interaction of characters from her other books.

🎧 Narrator comment: I enjoy Nick Russo as a narrator, he suits the characters, has good timing, cadence, inflections and intonations and it's easy to distinguish the characters from each other. Overall an enjoyable performance and he bought the story to life

Awesome book!! Amazing series 😍😍😍

I absolutely LOVED this series of books!! I hope there are more Torus stories to come, I’ll be sad if this is the end. I have come to love every one of Mary’s books and I can’t wait to read the next one!!!

Is this the last Torus Book?

I’ll be so sad if this is the last Torus book.

I have loved this series but this one was different from the first four books - more intrigue and background on the country, the bad guys and infrastructure.

I read this book first knowing I would purchase the audiobook as soon as it came out but I found it heavy with details so I couldn’t read it right before I went to bed since I needed to track the story - with the audiobook it was easier to follow but I must admit I couldn’t multitask while listening. Heavier story than the other Torus stories.

That being said - loved the characters and final resolution to their angst/tension.

A great story... but unexpected

As other readers have pointed out, this book was lacking a lot in the way of romance and even seemed a bit contradictory in regards to character feelings and reactions.

The high action and minimal roman between the main characters made this book make it feel like it should have been part of a different book series. There was so much potential for this to be sweeter... and for a pairing that was so long in the making, it is just a bit of a let down.

Don't get me wrong!! This is a fabulous book and I will be reading it over and over... I had just been hoping for a little bit more.

Ahh, Another Winner

Mary Calmes is one of those authors that releases a new book and I just buy it. I loved this series. I love how we also get to see not only the other characters from previous books in this series but we also get to see cameos of some of our favorite characters from her other books. It was a great read and a great listen since the narration was awesome.

So worth the credit. I can't wait to see what series or new book is coming next from Ms Calmes.

Great story

It was great to see old characters again and how they all interconnect between a few different series.

More Torus Guys

Full disclosure - I've been a Mary junkie for years and years.
Jared spent his adult, working life in service to the government and much if his work done in the shadows. His life has been entwined with Owen's for decades and while he sees Owen as a man, he can't get over the age difference between them. Owen had been waiting patiently for Jared to finally see him as a kid who Jared needs to recognize he's in love with. As lovely as Jared is, he's dense as a block of lead. A maddening and treacherous dash across Thailand to rescue Owen again is the impetus that Jared needed to face his doubts about what his and Owen's hearts want and need.
I loved seeing characters from other books pop up - I always love a peek at their lives after their book has ended.
The voice artist, Nick Russo, was new to me, and he did a good job with the entire cast.
I'm looking forward to Mary's next book.
