Lee is a quiet and unassuming office worker who leads a life of solitude, comfort, and routine. Day in and day out, he shuts off his brain, keeps his head down, and goes about doing his job and minding his own business. That is, he does until a drunken god shows up randomly one day and whisks him off into another world, demanding that Lee serve as his pawn in a game between the gods. "Kill. Kill them all." It's the first four words Lars usually wakes up to every morning, a voice telling him she's just giving him a "quest" that will help him "level". But even if he wanted to do it, he can't. They're cultivators: beings with ancestral bloodlines that have powers he could only dream of, while he is stuck as a puny human. Even if he could kill them, the people who bullied him, beat him, treated him like a punch-bag pariah for being a "tailless worthless human", he wouldn't. That is, until a vicious group of murderous psychopaths called a "sect" descend on his village.

Publisher's summary
Darwin, a video game addict, is sitting in his bathrobe and slippers playing his favorite MMO on a Christmas night when an uninvited guest breaks into his house to steal his belongings.
After the scuffle is over he finds himself transported into one of the sword and magic RPG-style MMOs that he has always loved to play, albeit one he has never heard of, where he has to overcome trials and tribulations at every turn as he fights for his life alongside new companions.

Pleasantly surprised!
I bought this audiobook having already read the entire series on Kindle. I wanted to see how the audio held up against the images and voices I'd formed in my mind. I'm often disappointed when books I love get made as movies or series.
But in this case, I was impressed. I listened while driving cross country. The imagery, humor, and the well-done accents had me drawn in to the point where I nearly ran myself out of gas.
I would recommend this book to anyone who loves a good story, dry humor, and solid game elements mixed in.

Spoons and bathrobes rocking the battlefield
This is a good start to a great series, the main character, Darwin, is cool. His life is a mystery, and he really takes it in stride when he is mysteriously sucked into his favorite video game. It is hilarious when he goes after mobs with just a spoon while wearing a bathrobe. The book is well written, and is witty. It has some excellent fight scenes.
The only point that it drags is when it swells on a race of aggressive winged expansionists. I get that eventually the flying female will have some importance to Darwin's life, but it just always seemed to pull the story down when things weren't focused on the king or Darwin. Either way, this is really a minor detail, but I disliked her so much I had to drop a star of each line over all. My kids loved this book, and my wife laughed outloud in several spots (She is a WOW player, and she snickered throughout the book).
It is a great start to a good series. Can't wait for more.

Couldn't finish it
I really hate this book. There's only an hour left in the audio and I just can't bring myself to continue, which shows how much I care about the characters. They're paper thin and their dialog is so awkward that it's painful to listen to. At no point do I feel that the characters are in real danger, so it's hard to build any suspense. In the middle of a climatic battle, there was a deus ex machina moment where it just ended at the snap of a finger.
The narrator does a pretty good job; my only criticism is that he has an odd cadence to his voice that reveals itself in almost all of the voices he does, which is a bit distracting.

a perfect gift for someone you hate
The book started out like most just Lit RPGs and the first few chapters were good. towards the midway point though it devolved into a nerds fantasy. the main character had three "negative" traits that are a edgy teens biggest fantasy. red eyes, big muscles and long nails. in the game 2 of the 5 female characters are fighting over his muscled bod which he simply has because isn't that every fat nerds fantasy? being buff and edgy without any effort. the bonus chapters left a horrible taste in my mouth, they are tacked on in a poor attempt to advance the main objective which was forgotten 2 chapters in. my recommendation is to listen to the sample audio , which provides enough info to combined with your imagination to figure out the book

The story was okay, but not as good as others
I've always liked the idea of the whole stuck in a game world story. This take on it wasn't bad, however could have done better if read by a different person. The Authors take on female characters all seem to be that they lack intelligence, even when you felt they should be smarter then they were. The Narrator made all the woman sound the same whiny and airheaded so as to be confusing at some points in the story. Also the narrator made me want to stop the story and be done with it altogether. I'll give part two a try and hope that with time they both get better. If not then I'll move on to a different series.

A bit of character building but that's it
Story starts off slow, or at least not particularly interestingly. Main character has magic muscles, red eyes, and claws and is suddenly magically transported to vr game in progress. Given a spoon and sent off on a quest. It felt like the story was trying too hard to be different.
Character wise, I cared about maybe 2 of the characters; the king and one of the players. I did not however ever gain any interest in the main character who the whole story is based around, which is probably not a good sign. The king showed interesting character development as his personality changes through the story, but that was really the highlight of the book.
Fighting essentially was essentially whoever the current chapter was about steamrolling over everything. I never felt like any of the characters was in any sort of danger or struggling particularly. The main story essentially derails 2 hours into the book. One of the big battles gets solved entirely by deus ex machina. There's too many questions and no real answers. Many similar books solve the problem by just going "god did it" which, while a poor explanation, is still an explanation. This essentially is like, yeah, it happened, here's some other details which also don't make sense.
I did like the performance, but a good performance can't make up entirely for a lackluster story. I've returned less than 5 books out of the close to 200 I've bought on audible. This will be one of them.

Quirky but fun
This story feels like a someone challenged the author to write a serious litrpg story with the most ridiculous starting point a bathrobe and spoon and make it a legitimately good story. I️ wasn’t blown away but I️ don’t regret my time listening to this book either.
Narration was average quality. Characters were memorable and fun.
Worth a credit if you want something a little different.

Had potential but misses the boat
The story builds a mystery around the nature of the player trapped in the game, but then when time comes for the big reveal, there's nothing. Anytime it feels like they're about to reveal the core conceit of the book, it suddenly sidetracks into silly teenage romance. The plot ultimately goes nowhere.

Great new series, must give it a try.
I think Charles Dean has a winner of a story here, half the time I was laughing my ass off, the other half I was just waiting for the next head spinner to come around the corner, I've spent the whole story so far trying to understand what the hell the main characters past history is about, he keeps giving you bits and pieces of it as it goes along, but it stays entertaining, I can't wait for the next book in the series to come out, thanks for a great book.

Not his best work
I mean, the story line is ok.. The narrator isn't the worst out there, but some of his accents are truly terrible.. I don't really have much more positive things to say really.. War Aeturnus is still by far Charles Deans best work..

Story
Lee is a quiet and unassuming office worker who leads a life of solitude, comfort, and routine. Day in and day out, he shuts off his brain, keeps his head down, and goes about doing his job and minding his own business. That is, he does until a drunken god shows up randomly one day and whisks him off into another world, demanding that Lee serve as his pawn in a game between the gods. Now, trapped in a completely different world full of danger, magic, and creatures, Lee has to figure out how to stay alive long enough to make it back home.

Story
