Dividing the work into two sections, Castaneda begins by describing don Juan’s philosophies, then continues with his own reflections.

Story
For us to perceive any of the worlds that exist beside our own, not only do we have to covet them but we need to have sufficient energy to seize them. In this revolutionary book, Carlos Castaneda offers listeners the key to this energetic conditioning for the first time, revealing a series of body positions and physical movements that enabled various sorcerers to navigate their own sorceric journeys. By sharing this wisdom, Carlos Castaneda makes it possible for listeners to travel to some of these other realms, which are as real, unique, absolute, and engulfing as our own world.

Originally drawn to Yaqui Indian spiritual leader don Juan Matus for his knowledge of mind-altering plants, best-selling author Carlos Castaneda soon immersed himself in the sorcerer's magical world entirely. Ten years after his first encounter with the shaman, Castaneda examines his field notes and comes to understand what don Juan knew all along - that these plants are merely a means to understanding the alternative realities that one cannot fully embrace on one's own.

Carlos Castaneda takes the listener into the very heart of sorcery, challenging both imagination and reason, shaking the very foundations of our belief in what is “natural” and “logical”. His landscape is full of terrors and mysterious forces, as sharply etched as a flash of lightning on the deserts and mountains where don Juan takes him to pursue the sorcerer’s knowledge - the knowledge that it is the Eagle that gives us, at our births, a spark of awareness, that it expects to reclaim at the end of our lives and which the sorcerer, through his discipline, fights to retain.

My mind is blown
I avoided Carlos Castaneda for a long time. I heard all of the talk that he was a charlatan and so I just didn't bother reading his material for myself. Let me just say, this is the first book of his that I have read and it is deeply complex and heavily esoteric to the extreme. I've listened to this book four times already and I'm still learning from it. It is a lot to take in. There is a massive amount of information here and all of it is vital if you're on the path to understanding the true nature of reality.
If you've read books about strange phenomena such as "skinwalker ranch" or you've read books by John keel and you actually want to know in depth what was happening in those instances 'beyond the veil'- read this book. I'm absolutely floored at how helpful, amazing and absolutely mind blowing it was.
I can't recommend it enough!

I've done all of this before I read the book.
When I was about 12, I've learned to control my dreams. I kept going to the same place and I've formed the world I dreamed each night. I've taught this process to a friend and after two years we have managed to coordinate our dreams and meet in there. I got invaded by an entity after about 2 years that kept sucking my energy and each state of dreaming left me exhausted. After coming into physical contact with it, it electrocuted me with fear I've never felt before or since and left me unable to go to school the next day, so I had to stop this practice. Ever since then, I had an occasional voice start talking to me if I got into a half-asleep state. I don't have any special abilities, I never knew what this dream state can be used for, but I can perceive the world around me and communicate with people around while dreaming. I have also felt asleep in a dream and had another dream that was super realistic and when my mom woke me up the next morning for school, I went back through waking up in the original dream first. I always thought what a weird experience that was.
20 years later I read this book. Words can not describe the way my mind is blown right now. What is written in this book must sound absurd to you, but I tell you, every single word in this book is true, I live it.

Absolutely an awful book! Written in some Celestine Prophecy code like archaic form. Very difficult to follow, keep my interest and understand the authors purpose and direction. Do not get this book. I read this book 25 years ago, bit now it felt like a different book. My understanding of the world has changed so much since then, and the ideas in the book now sound more real now than fictional. I suggest listening to it after you check Castaneda's previous books.

High weirdness
Listened to this a couple of times and what can l say? The narration was quite good, but instead of finding some wisdom or inner peace, l found a vaguely sinister, confusing storyline that seemed to go around in circles, with no real meaning or resolution. This dream was more like a nightmare.

Overall, very good.
My only criticism of Luis Moreno's rendition of Carlos Castañeda's work is that Luis should have read, and familiarised himself with Carlos' entire portfolio concerning the sorcerer Don Juan Matus, before endeavouring to reproduce the work for audio books. He might have avoided mispronouncing the terminology. I refer specifically to the term 'nagual', which occurs throughout the books from 'Tales of Power' onwards. A shame, because other than that one glaring error, Luis is brilliant!
