The essential skill of creating and maintaining new businesses - the art of the entrepreneur - can be summed up in a single word: managing. In High Output Management, Andrew S. Grove, former chairman and CEO (and employee number three) of Intel, shares his perspective on how to build and run a company. Born of Grove’s experiences at one of America’s leading technology companies, this legendary management book is a Silicon Valley staple, equally appropriate for sales managers, accountants, consultants, and teachers, as well as CEOs and start-up founders.

Much of what we hear about who gets to the top, and how, is wrong. Those who become chief executives set their sights on the C-suite at an early age. In fact, over 70 percent of the CEOs didn't have designs on the corner office until later in their careers. You must graduate from an elite college. In fact, only seven percent of CEOs in the dataset are Ivy League graduates - and eight percent didn't graduate from college at all. To become a CEO you need a flawless résumé. The reality: 45 percent of CEO candidates had at least one major career blowup.

Reward and recognition programs can be costly and inefficient, and they primarily reward employees who are already highly engaged and productive performers. Worse still, these programs actually decrease employee motivation because they can make individual recognition, rather than the overall success of the team, the goal. Yet many businesses turn to these measures first-unaware of a better alternative. So, when it comes to changing your organizational culture, carrots and sticks don't work!

Yet, the toughest transition in business comes when expert leaders are asked to move beyond their expertise and lead a larger group. In Wanda Wallace’s experience, this move - from expert to spanning leader - requires a new mind-set about how to lead.

Publisher's summary
The Art of Selling Rocket Science is a rare series of books written specifically for sales and marketing of technical services, including engineering, architecture, construction, applied science, information technology, and management consulting. These books support our main theme that the marketing and sales of complex, technical services are distinctly different from simpler consumer services. The professionals who provide these services earn their livings by developing solutions to complex problems, yet are also asked to participate in selling their services to customers. Because of the human factors in how customers make buying choices, we contend there is art combined with the selling and buying of science.
Selling technical professional services consists of two different components, both of which are critical. The first part is the technical content, familiar territory to engineers and applied scientists, based on their schooling, experience, and personality. However, the second component is the emotional side, relating to values, feelings, and human psychology. To many practitioners, this can be foreign and uncomfortable because they received almost no education in the topic. Because of these human factors in making buying choices, we contend there is art combined with the selling of science.
Charles McIntyre and Harold Glaser are working professionals who have built their careers in the technical services industry. They titled the series The Art of Selling Rocket Science because they are fascinated with the marriage of science and creativity to connect highly technical professional services and the human side of how people make choices.
