Not Well Written … Or Narrated

Anxiety certainly is a buzzword today, and anyone who legitimately battles with anxiety, whether occasionally or regularly, has my deepest sympathy. However, far too many nonfiction authors jump on the anxiety bandwagon because it's a hot topic, having little true understanding of the phenomenon. Such is the case with this book, unfortunately. While the author promises the moon in the book description, he in no way follows through on these promises. I never got a genuine sense of the author, his anxiety struggles ... or otherwise. Instead, this came across as somebody's poorly cobbled-together research paper on anxiety. The author uses many technical psychological terms, especially in the beginning chapters. If you don't already have a good grounding in psychology and its terminology, you may very well find yourself grappling with what the author is trying to convey. I have a modest background in psychology as a registered nurse, but I sense those without that kind of training (or above) would struggle with some concepts as presented in this book. Along with this rather dry, uninteresting, potentially confusing narrative style, the narrator had odd vocal tics. I don't know if they were actually in the script he got, but he threw in an exceedingly large amount of random “a’s” that did not make grammatical sense whatsoever, including in front of verbs! The indefinite article only goes in front of appropriate nouns. Throughout the book, too, grammatical oddities abounded that rang oddly in my ear, making me question how much the author or his ghostwriter knew of the English language and its constructs. There are plenty of books on anxiety out there. I recommend finding a better-written (and narrated!) one.
