Story
When I was younger, my mother saved my settlement from the unblessed dead that would have killed us all. It cost her everything to reveal her necromancy and sent shockwaves through our stringent religious settlement. Convicted of heresy against our sacred lost texts, she died soon after. Since then, I have worked hard to maintain my pious standing so that when I turn 18 I will be selected by a suitable husband at the bridal auction. As the large clock in town square ticks down to my 18th birthday, the dead have been appearing in my garden.

In the zombie apocalypse, no one is safe. Not even children. That’s what twelve-year-old Josh and his friends in the Zombie Hunters Club discovered when the undead invaded their school in The Living Dead Boy. Now, Josh and the remaining Zombie Hunters are stuck on a city bus traveling across zombie-infested Texas. With fires burning on the horizon, mass evacuations underway, zombies roaming the countryside, and in-fighting among the adults on the bus creating tension, Josh has never felt so helpless. Despite his father’s insistence that the adults can handle the situation, Josh knows far too well from watching zombie movies that one person can put everyone else at risk.

Publisher's Summary
Though I’ve been exonerated through the Necromancer Trial, there are those who are convinced that I am a devil-woman who should be exiled, or worse, killed.
I’m trapped by the Laws of the Lost Texts. I can’t simply buy a ticket to the train and leave. I have to endure the Bridal Auction and hope my newfound friend, Quade, will be able to purchase my hand in marriage. If he fails his bid, I will be married off to one of the Crats. I’d rather be declared Unclaimed and condemned to a life of servitude to the community.
All the while, the secret necromancer lurks in the shadows threatening to upturn my life and expose my true nature.
To finally have control over my own life, I may have to take the ultimate risk and escape over the wall into the Deadlands.

Good story
This is the second book in the Hidden Necromancer series. I am hooked on it and am looking forward to the next book to see what the future holds for Ilyse. I think Laura Bannister is doing a very good job narrating. I would recommend this series.

Excellent
Rhiannon is one of my favorite authors. I’m so happy she gave me the opportunity to listen to and review her his series.
The characters are written so well and I love them.
I loved getting to read more about the unclaimed and seeing that all the men aren’t as pious as they claim to be. The Angelina story line is a bit heartbreaking.
Think handmaids tale but throw some supernatural powers in there with the threat of zombies.
I can’t wait for the next book!
Narration was excellent as well.

Brilliant author and narrator.
The second book was just as fantastic as the first the twists in this one was outstanding. For seven and a half hours you could not drag me away from my computer. Okay, I did take a couple of minute breaks for the call of nature and some coffee, but listening to this book was my sole purpose in life yesterday. There are only two books so far in the series but even if there are additional books you will not feel let down and on pins and needles this was a complete first chapter in IIyse life. I cannot wait to see if Ms. Frater will write more I will be watching. Now for Laura Bannister the narrator she is a brilliant artist who brought so much to the reading. She was a great choice. I highly recommend you either read or listen to “The Unblessed Dead” and “The Accused Dead” they are worth every minute you spend with them!

Listen in order
This is the second book I’ve read/listened to by Rhiannon Frater.
I enjoyed the original twist on zombies with the restrictive social organization. The suspense behind the rogue necromancer is engaging. The book gives us a conclusion at the end, but also a big reveal that leads into the next book. These books are best listened to in order.
This is the second book I’ve listened to by this narrator ( Laura Bannister ) and I would listen to another. She does well giving life to all the characters and her style especially suits the main character. She brings out Ilyse’s innocence, strength, naivety, and struggle to conform to the beliefs she’s been brought up with.
There are no explicit sex scenes, or excessive violence. There is the occasional swearing.

Extremely Suspenseful
It has been a long time since I have come across a book with this much suspense. I was afraid that things would go wrong at the bridal auction or that the council would take Ilyse into custody, or worse. Then there were the competing voices vying for Ilyse's commitment. It is terrible when you do not know who to trust. Also, I had a deep desire for Quade to just run away with Ilyse. I felt trapped right alongside her.
There were shocking revelations of betrayal and plain evil done to Ilyse and her family but there were plenty of satisfying twists and pay-backs. The most thrilling part was revealed closer to the end, things revealed that let you know that the sequel is likely to be incredible. I can't wait!
I gave this book 5 stars on all points. This is a well-written series and the author selected an amazing narrator. I wish I could give more than 5 stars for the narration.
I was given this audiobook upon my request in exchange for a review and I am so glad because I loved it.
