Publisher's summary

Pittsburgh, 1900. The mysterious Vanderhorn family hires Nora Bennett as a nurse and companion to her injured, handsome, stepson Alex. Nathan Vanderhorn is drawn to Nora, even though he's betrothed to the socially elite Celeste. Though Nora vies to steer clear of the family problems, a sinister plot pulls her in deeper than she'd ever imagined. Who in this strange household could she trust?

Nathan is forced to run the family steel mill when all he really wants is to become an attorney. Alex wants nothing more than to walk again and run his steel mill. The willful stepmother strives to keep them both from their desires. Both brothers seem to be attracted to Nora. Which brother will she fall in love with?

This is exemplary evidence of why Barbara Goss is at the top of her game!

This is the reason why after totally not liking the first book I read by Barbara Goss I kept reading her books, even though the book wasn’t good, the writing was great, and it was her best. Unlike most historical romance stories, in this one, the characters had normal reactions when there was a misunderstanding. It was quickly resolved and didn’t last for months and it didn’t have life-changing effects. This is real drama; this is a totally dysfunctional family with a capital D. If you want to read a great example of historical romance at its best, this book is a must. I really loved it.

So Sweet!

This is a clean and sweet romance. I really enjoyed this story and thought the narrator added so much to this book with his performance.R. William James was able to give the various characters different voices. This story is original and has some unexpected twists. I thought this was one of my favorite books by this author and will definitely listen to it again. There is a wholesomeness about this author's writing and fitting for the time period of her books. My review is not a synopsis of the book, but rather my opinion of it. Certain characters were very endearing in this story and others were despicable. I was provided with this review copy audiobook at no charge and have voluntarily written this review.

I liked this one!

I really enjoyed this book. I like that Nora was a strong young lady and wasn't cowered by the mean actions of others. Well it is understandable for someone to wallow in self-pity for a bit after suffering what Alex did, it was refreshing to see him desire to get better and do what he needed to do to see that happen. It's a pity to see a man such as Nathan with no backbone to stand up to his wicked mother but thankful in the end he did the right thing.

This was another very interesting book full of interesting characters with the storyline that kept you wondering what would happen next. The narrative was done well.

I received this free audiobook from the author and I am voluntarily leaving this review.

written by a JR high student who failed history

The story plot had potential, however, the character development is poorly done. The year of 1900 in which the book is written is completely unbelievable for the actual dialogue and social class of the characters. besides what person who is desiring to be a lawyer says that they try to side step arguments? little things like saying he needed a carriage house to put two horses. Carriage houses generally are not to stable horses. Elevators didn't work with a button they were operated with a lever on the inside. What doctor in the 1900s is going to give genetic and environmental hypotheses about heart disease to a "mere" woman about another elderly woman. when the life expectancy is only 12% at 65. (Nora's mom has to pushing 70 if Nora is 21 and she said her mother gave birth to her at almost fifty. Also, modern lingo like "man up" and other phrases drove me crazy. .and the stupidity of " oh, I can give you back rubs at night in your bed but, I can't travel with you". And my personal favorite..( In reference to drinking champagne on their wedding night) "it is a special occasion; I cleared it with God". Jeeze, it was just too cheesy. It should have ended with the champagne bubbles tickling Nora's nose. The therapist seduction is too much. yeah, yeah Alex is a wonderful man blah blah blah. The narrator's talent was wasted on this book. Otherwise it was gag worthy

This book is great. I love the characters. Having the hero not perfect was a fantastic choice. Looking forward to reading/ listening to more!!!

The Best!!!

I did not know what to expect when I began listening to this story, but I was quickly transfixed with the narrator's voice and the storyline as it unfolded. I felt I was there and could watch the heroine, Nora, get hired for the job as companion for Alex, who was crippled due to a bad accident. Alex had been so active running his successful steel mill and was just angry at what had happened to him. Nora is determined and sets out to help him exercise and build his strength. All Alex wants is to walk again.
But there are others who don't want Alex to ever walk again and therein brings forth the suspense, intrigue and the villains. Watching the slow growing attraction between the two and their journey with many twists and turns and their faith in God, made this one of my favorite stories of Barb's! Truly do not miss this one!

Unexpected

Early in the book I thought the story was going to play out quickly and felt disappointed. To my delight, the story took on some unexpected twists that did not follow the usual historical romance template, making it a pleasurable read as the hero and heroine faced unusual obstacles.

Move Over Snidely Whiplash!

Move over Snidely Whiplash! In the best style of Victorian Gothic romance we have an evil stepmother; brooding, crippled hero; sweet, unsuspecting, clear-eyed heroine; feckless half-brother; and evil mill owner with beautiful, haughty daughter. A pleasing potboiler pleasantly read [AUDIO] for a delightfully entertaining interlude. Although not her usual wild west setting, author Barbara Goss again serves up distinctive personalities in a dastardly, devious plot with a side of faith-based love and romance. Happy reading/listening!

Temptation by moonlight

There is not a lot of mystery in this one because we see through the eyes of the criminals as well as the main characters. But I still liked it. There are one or two scenes that annoyed me however, I know why the author wrote it that way. It reflected the characters attitude.
If you like a little mystery and more romance then this is for you.
This is a clean read with mild sexual content, no profanity and mild violence.
