Publisher's Summary

A hilarious and swashbuckling stand-alone teen historical fiction novel.

A young bisexual British lord embarks on an unforgettable grand tour of Europe with his best friend/secret crush. An 18th-century romantic adventure for the modern age written by This Monstrous Thing author Mackenzi Lee - Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda meets the 1700s.

Henry "Monty" Montague doesn't care that his roguish passions are far from suitable for the gentleman he was born to be. But as Monty embarks on his grand tour of Europe, his quests for pleasure and vice are in danger of coming to an end. Not only does his father expect him to take over the family's estate upon his return, but Monty is also nursing an impossible crush on his best friend and traveling companion, Percy.

So Monty vows to make this yearlong escapade one last hedonistic hurrah and flirt with Percy from Paris to Rome. But when one of Monty's reckless decisions turns their trip abroad into a harrowing manhunt, it calls into question everything he knows, including his relationship with the boy he adores.

Witty, dazzling, and intriguing at every turn, The Gentleman's Guide to Vice and Virtue is an irresistible romp that explores the undeniably fine lines between friendship and love.

    "Even better than I expected..."

This was a wonderful book that took me by surprise with its humor, well-paced plot, and memorable characters. I took a chance on it, and I am so glad I did. The fact that characters felt flawed and real, yet didn't irritate me, was a refreshing change from other books I have picked up recently. I recommend it to anyone who wants a quick, fun read.

starts out very promising, fun characters, but the uninventive plot somehow manages to make alchemy and pirates dull.

    "SO GOOD!!"

I'm genuinely at a lost for words right now this was absolutely fantastic. Christian Coulson is one of my new favorite narrators - he knocked it out of the park! Go into this blind its so much more than the synopsis gives!

"Most entertaining audiobook I have heard in YEARS"

Everything about this book is exquisite. The swashbuckling tale, the magnificent prose, the incredibly detailed historical milieu, and the knockout performance of the narrator.

    "Fun and compelling"

It was not what I had expected at all. Christian Coulson was spunky and really brought the story to life. The characters were very endearing. The plot and settings pull you in and hold you. Monty was a little too cocky at times for me, but he was palatable as a whole.

"Perfect Summer Reading (Er, rather listening)!"

This book was amazing! It had everything I needed for a summer read: inclusivity, PRIDE, adventure, near-immaculate world building of 18th century Europe, and, to quite a lesser extent, not-so-swashbuckling pirates.

While, at some points, certain details in the plot seemed rather laboriously described, they all fell into place in the last few chapters, which brought together symbols and extended metaphors I hadn't even realized had been made.

I was hooked from the moment I read the description, and, if you're like me, you'll be won over by this coming-of-age story's exotic cast of characters and it's exploration of many things - from bisexuality to feminism to the entire European continent.

    "Hilarious, heartbreaking, honest & beautiful"

One of the best books of the year. A hilarious romp of a historical novel, enough danger, magic and adventure to keep me on the edge of my seat, and brilliant, brilliant characters who aren't so much flawed as painfully, adorably real. I couldn't help love Monty even when he was being an idiot, selfish or completely ridiculous, or even all three at once. The side characters and the relationships between them were fantastically portrayed and really made the book. Also, outstanding handling of diversity in a setting and era where being anything other than white, male and preferably rich was subject to varying but usually horrifying levels of prejudice. It covered some really heavy, tough issues without ever coming across preachy or derailing the story and honestly, some of the hardships faced by the characters, especially Percy, brought me close to tears.

"One of the best audio books I've ever listened to."

The narrator was amazing and perfect as Monty's voice and for the story set in the 1700s. This is the feel good adventure novel with a great set of main characters, all three of them distinctive and real. The language is creative and humourus, and I was smiling and laughing the whole way through it. Would highly recommend.
