Publisher's Summary

'Stone cold sober.' Sounds horrible, doesn't it? Hard, icy. Brrrrr. No bloody ta.

However, as the millions who choose to stay sober now know, the propaganda around drinking and sobriety is wonky. Sober doesn't feel stony, or cold.

Retired wreckhead Catherine Gray, author of surprise best seller The Unexpected Joy of Being Sober, is now in her ninth sober year and has learnt a damn sight more.

This hotly anticipated sequel enlists the help of experts and case studies, turning a curious, playful gaze onto provocative questions. Is alcohol a parenting aid? Why are booze and cocaine such a horse and carriage? Once an addict, always an addict? How do you feel safe—from alcohol, others and yourself—in sobriety?

Whether you're a dedicated boozehound, flirting with teetotalling or already sober, this witty, gritty listen may just change how you think about alcohol forever.

Helping me out of relapse...

I stopped drinking for 2 years when I read Catherine's first book and everything was going great. However, when covid hit I felt anxious and homesick as I live in HK and ALL of my family live in the UK. My usual coping mechanisms such as travel and going out for food/exercise were taken away because everyone was told to stay in as much as possible. I also hadn't seen my family for 3 years which led to soo much anxiety and homesickness. So, I ended up finding escapism in alcohol again. I was never under an illusion that I could do it in moderation. I just need something to numb the feeling of being trapped. It's taken me a year to come out of the cycle but I've found my way to sobriety again. Catherine's new book gives me so much hope that I will achieve it for a lifetime. Her approach is very relatable, funny and warm which really resonates with me. I recommend everyone who wishes to cut down or eliminate booze to listen/read this book!

Just what was needed

I’m a writer and alcohol has been a problem for me for years. I listened to the first book as well and find even though I’ve had a few relapses since then, it’s never too late to get back into sobriety. I’m shooting for the rest of my life now and plan to stick with it.

Recommend!

Full of some great info! The narrator is a bit difficult to understand at times, but is pleasant to listen to, so may have to back up and re-listen to a few things. Overall, wonderful, well-written book!

Helped me find happiness and peace in my life

Catherine’s first book on sobriety, the unexpected joy of being sober, was a huge part of why I was able to quit slowly killing myself with booze. Her story resonated with me, and showed me there was hope. This book, sunshine warm sober, i just finished reading at my 90 days sober mark, and it just nailed in the coffin why I’m here and where I’m headed. In the sunshine warm direction. Thank you Catherine for changing my life for the best!

Another great book by Catherine Gray

I really enjoyed this book! I listened to The Unexpected Joy of Being Sober last year and really liked it so I thought I would give this one a try. Her storytelling is captivating and hilarious at times. Started a little slow for me but picked up after a few chapters. Will be listening to more of her books for sure!

Just ok

Personally I didn’t find this as helpful as her first book. Felt like a collection of random thoughts.

What a great book! Enjoyed listening to it!

After reading the first book- I almost missed the voice and Catherine's story. Got the second book and feel like I need to read/listen to more of her book! Relatable, inspiring, nurturing and at time funny.

Feels like a churned out title for revenue

A very boring monologue of how the author went through the motions of being a bit of a drunk and is now writing endless books about it. going to try and claim a refund.

Why not break the chapters up

A 3 5hr chapter. Can the audio book company not help you edit it into chapters.

Another fantastic listen ❤

Thank you Catherine for for more fantastic sober stories of hope, joy and sunshine.
I'm 8 months sober with the help of these books, AA and the rest of the sober community.
These audiables have without a doubt made those times inbetween meetings bearable, those shakey moments, the times I need reminding why I'm doing this. You are my torch in that hole, I'm out now, thank you with all my heart ❤

Genuine, warm and informative

I loved The Unexpected Joy of Being Sober so much I read it probably about ten times when I was thinking of quitting drinking, so I was very excited for the sequel and it did not disappoint. It is written in the same genuine, warm and informative style, and busts the “stone cold sober” myth.

Some good pockets of wisdom from someone very knowledgeable

I loved the first book and Catherine Gray is amazing and so well respected for her work. I found this one to be more about going down memory lane and drunken nights so I ended up skipping lots. Some great pockets and thought provoking insights however.

A bit all over the place

I found this book jumped around a lot and was a bit hard to follow. There's some great parts but you have to wade through a lot of her random reminiscing to get there. There's a lot of reminiscing! I was hoping to read more about the future of sobriety, not the boozy past.

Perfectly articulated for those who have a little sobriety time behind them

Loved this book because it’s focussed on the future. So many “quit lit” are memoirs of all the awful times, this is the complete opposite. As usual Catharine Gray (no relation to me) captured me from beginning to end with a combo of all you’ll need to stay inspired all with a good dose of keeping it light and entertaining. Loved it.
