Publisher's summary

Innocence dies so easily. Evil lives again...and again...and again.

One hundred years ago in Port Arbello a pretty little girl began to scream. And struggle. And die. No one heard. No one saw. Just one man whose guilty heart burst in pain as he dashed himself to death in the sea.

Now something peculiar is happening in Port Arbello. The children are disappearing, one by one. An evil history is repeating itself. And one strange, terrified child has ended her silence with a scream that began 100 years ago.

classic John Saul

I read this book when it was released in hardcover in 1977. I enjoyed listening to the audio book, the narration was excellent. Old family curses and hauntings never make for a happy ending. This story, not surprisingly, ended in a bit of a cliffhanger. It was entertaining, though. The characters were well developed by the author, and the narrator brought them to life. Good story.

Macabre and fascinating

Okay… so I just finished. This boom as filled with all sorts of twists and turns and was actually broken up into 3 parts- 100 years ago, like 50 years in the future and the present. Throughout the book, you are eluded to some tremendous violence and a legend that plagues the Conger family but it isn’t until the end of the book, the present that the pieces fall into place. My little brother had this book and I noticed it was as available on Audible plus so I gave it a listen and read along. Full disclaimer, cats and kids are killed so if you’re not able to stomach that sort of content, this book is not for you. I wanted to read a spooky book for October and even though my thought are still racing, I’m glad I saw this book through. The narration was very good and you can really feel the terror that this book was emoting. I gave this book 5 stars because I couldn’t put it down. I had to see what happened over 100 years of content. It is highly disturbing but I highly recommend.

I read this book Years It is John Saul's Best book

This is John Saul's best book ever he wrote. I never forgoten reading it many years ago. This book destroy all books by Steven King, even Steven used John's Title for a poor uninteresting knock-off poorly written. John Saul,s Supper the Children is Powerful and Destroy the plagiarism of Steven King and the other plagiarized Suffer - the - Children books.

book started slow, then got better, but the ending was a huge let down, it was like it ending in the middle of a chapter

Captivating

Captivating however the ending I did not like it was rushed and I would have liked a different ending to tie up the beginning and middle

Narration is amazing and this is a gripping story

Paul Woodson did a fantastic job with his narration! I loved it! The voice that he used for each character was right on point. The story was also engaging, and creepy. I would definitely recommend.

unsatisfying ending

... but typical for the genre. All in all, it's a good quick read. John Saul is, as always, an excellent wordsmith.

Loved it!

This is the second time for me with the story I read the book in four hours back in the 80s and John. Saul automatically became my favorite author. I listen to audible while traveling in the car and the story at me gripping the steering wheel I plan on listening to the rest of his stories on audible, which I have also already read.

Love John Saul .. Saul never disappoints

Saul hits all levels of reading pleasure in this book which I absolutely will listen to more than once. The ending left me hanging, of course, I would love to read (listen) to book #2 of this one.

Move over King and Koontz

John Saul is a brilliant story teller. I literrally cannot stop thinking of this book since I finished it. John Saul is underrated in the horror genre. If you are a fan of King and Koontz, you should give this book a listen. It's right up there with Saul's "The Right Hand of Evil" and "Black Creek Crossing."
