Betrayal was just the beginning…

Melanie Hale is a devoted mother to her two children, a diligent caregiver to her ailing mother-in-law and a trusted neighbor in their wealthy Louisiana community. Above all, she's a loving partner to her wonderful husband, Collin.

Then there are the parts of herself that Mel keeps hidden. She's exhausted, worried and unfulfilled. So much so that one night, after a writers' group meeting, Mel begins an affair with a successful local author named Luke. Suddenly she's transformed into a role she doesn't recognize—a woman who deceives with unseemly ease. A woman who might be capable of just about anything.

When Mel finds Luke's dead body in his lavish rented house, she realizes just how high the stakes have become. Not only does she have to keep her affair a secret in order to preserve her marriage, but she desperately needs to avoid being implicated in Luke's death. But who would want to kill him? Who else in her life is keeping secrets? And most terrifying of all, how far will they—and she—go to keep those secrets hidden?

Every neighborhood has a story. It could be the tragedy that took place years ago, or maybe an urban legend about that creepy house down the street. Or perhaps it's the new couple on the block who seem to be hiding something. These tales of suspense and mystery are what drive the popularity of the fastest growing subgenre of thrillers: the domestic thriller. We’ve made this list to help you choose the best domestic thriller audiobooks out there.

Unexpected Twists • Engaging Storyline • Excellent Narration • Suspenseful Plot • Clever Writing • Emotional Delivery

First, there is a DV/SA trigger warning for this one. Written in first person, this story starts out with a forbidden connotation and a host of relatable characters. The author draws you in with probably universally relatable concerns and revelations; the narrator does an amazing job to the point that it is easy to forget she is not simply sharing her story. There is a very human element to these characters, and ultimately a desire to know more about them, and even to know that they’re going to be ok, albeit forever changed. And as is typical with this author, there is plenty of female empowerment, even in the midst of vulnerable, insecure moments.

This is a great book. The voice was fitting for the character. The storyline was feasible. Highly recommend this book.

This is the first book I’ve read from this author and they did not disappoint. What a terrific thriller jam-packed with tension and twists I never saw coming!

Narrator was great, she really was but she sounded much too old for the description given for Mel. It was off putting bc it seemed like Luke and Lacey were younger than her but never acknowledged. I also think too much time was devoted to describing the love affair leaving the last quarter of the book, which was she most exciting part, very rushed. I would’ve loved to have seen more development in this part of the book. It just left like there was so much more that could’ve been told. What about Claire? I was expecting more of a connection to Luke, Joe, or even Lacey or Luke’s wife but nothing. That was lost on me bc there were times when Claire’s background seemed important but in my opinion the story would’ve been the same with or without her. I think Claire could’ve been a missing twist. Also what about Rachel’s friend, that was a huge element but where did that go? What was the meaning or impact of her friend’s disappearance? Then sweet Ben. As a mother of a special needs child on the spectrum, there were some surprisingly accurate descriptions of what it’s like to parent & love a child with special needs but was also unrealistic by giving Mel so much free time, I don’t think that has to be a huge issue bc the purpose or the story wasn’t entirely about the life of a special needs parent, but seemed like if there was such a strong start, this piece of it should’ve continued with the same tempo throughout and the truth is, Mel never would’ve had that kind of time on her hands. Good story, I love the author, I would’ve preferred a younger sounding narrator to match the characters description, slow in places that didn’t matter to me and rushed and only scratched the surface of the twists, several loose ends for several characters, but I would recommend this read…once, but will not be making my “YOU GOTTA READ THIS” list to my book friends.

It wasn’t bad but it could’ve been so good

The ending was a bit abrupt but the story was well written and kept me wanting more throughout the whole book. Love this author and the reader.

Another hit by Seraphina!

The reader did a great job, but the writer was redundant, the climax was eh, and the ending warrants a sequel.

This story definitely drew me in and held my interest. I just kept waiting to understand why the mother-in-law ran away and came back dirty and who was watching her when the family took little outings. It was more of a distraction than enriching to the plot. I also didn't find resolution in Valerie's character. I loved her introduction, as it made me wonder if the title had a double meaning. But I couldn't decide if I pitied her or despised her. There needed to be a sympathetic reason that she needed the money or something to tie up her role in the story. It wouldn't make it right but we needed to understand how she went so far off the path to the point where Luke wrote her out of his will. The main character was delusional in some respects ("I raised kind children" even though she sat with her daughter and made fun of another girl, and the many times that she convinced herself that she was only doing what she had to do when she was doing terrible things). It did hold my interest, though, and not many books have recently! The audiobook reader was excellent, as she always is!

Compelling read but some loose ends
