Publisher's summary

From New York Times best-selling author Jeffery Deaver comes a tale of a bucolic getaway and an unsettling spirit.

Amanda and Charlie are spending their first weekend away in months. They’ve rented a luxurious vacation house on Lost Valley Lake. Swimming, bicycling, and romance are the order of the day, and all is good. That is, until someone - or something - appears on the shore across the lake, just as the sky turns gray and the water chill and choppy.

When the apparition, or whatever it might be, grows closer and closer, it soon becomes clear that there are certain types of evil that you can’t protect yourself from with locked doors and windows.

And perhaps you can’t protect yourself from them at all.

Clever, but mechanical

I really like Deaver’s work. He’s known for his twists and turns, most of which the reader doesn’t see coming. But this story doesn’t manage to surprise very effectively, and without that there’s not too much substance here.

There’s no deep characterization, so no connection between me as a reader and the characters. Because I don’t connect with the characters, there isn’t any suspense regarding what happens to them.

It’s a clever little story, without anything beyond the mechanics of it on which to recommend it. I doubt a beginning writer without a following would have found a market for this.

Zoe Chao is an excellent narrator, and I’d be happy to listen to her again.

Very Good!

I actually got this and another story from same author as an Audible Plus but both books were good enough to make me want to find more from this very talented author.

Terrible Read!

HORRIBLE STORYLINE! TERRIBLE NARRATIVE. NOT WORTH YOUR HARD EARNED MONEY.

There were long periods of time, dead air.
Absolutely no plot line what so ever.
I have no idea how this even made it's way to Audible.

Great story, not padded!

The story was exciting and complete with twists that kept it interesting. It gave all necessary details without padding it to make the story excessively long for no reason.
