Publisher's Summary

When the Imperial prison barge Purge - temporary home to 500 of the galaxy's most ruthless killers, rebels, scoundrels, and thieves - breaks down in a distant, uninhabited part of space, its only hope appears to lie with a star destroyer found drifting, derelict, and seemingly abandoned. But when a boarding party from the Purge is sent to scavenge for parts, only half of them come back - bringing with them a horrific disease so lethal that within hours nearly all aboard the Purge die in ways too hideous to imagine.

And death is only the beginning....

The Purge's half-dozen survivors - two teenage brothers, a sadistic captain of the guards, a couple of rogue smugglers, and the chief medical officer, the lone woman on board - will do whatever it takes to stay alive. But nothing can prepare them for what lies waiting aboard the Star Destroyer amid its vast creaking emptiness that isn't really empty at all. For the dead are rising: soulless, unstoppable, and unspeakably hungry.

Awesome atmospheric Star Wars horror

The Star Wars universe has always been about adventure and might, but being a full grown adult and a fan, I am always in search for good stories in the Expanded Universe.

I had always thought my beloved franchise needed some good mature stories and here it is. Death Troopers is a mature, fast paced story that will make you enjoy this book in one sitting.

The story is heavy on character development and you end up actually caring for what happens to all of them.

Narrative is pretty atmospheric and you feel like you are there, trying to get out of a swarm of monsters that are up for a good lunch.

Now about the narrator. This guy is AWESOME. I am pretty impressed by his quality, his acting skills and how he can switch from a teenage voice to a droid to a girl to a villain. All in a single chapter. If you happen to know him, please tell him I am a huge fan.

The production is also top notch. I has plenty of sounds and atmospheres and clips from the movies.

The book is a blast. Just plain fun and it will give you the creeps rather often.

Fantastic work.

Freaking scary!

Man this book will ENTRANCE you with the horror. At several points I had to stop because it was freaking me out. The chapter transitions which are screamed in a freaky way will really add to freaking you out. And yes thus far I've used the word freak a lot, because this book did a very good job of scaring the bejesus out of me. I had to stop listening to it after hours at work, cuz I was all alone. The narration is AWESOME. They have full dramatization and a full cast as far as I can tell. WARNING: This audio book WILL scare most people. I am no shyster to horror, with all classic horror movies being enjoyable to me. But jeez, the way this book is paced you constantly feel the constraints of the spaceships. There is nowhere safe to run. Nowhere to safe to hide. If horror is your bag, GET THIS AUDIO BOOK! If you are easily frightened stay away!

Has its moments. Not many, but it does have them.

I've never heard any other narrations by Sean Kenin, but he is stellar here. He uses an array of different voices, accents, and speech patterns so you always know which character is speaking. His natural reading voice is clear and pleasant. I will have to look for more of his work. Strong audio design continues beyond the narration, with licensed Star Wars music and sound effects used throughout for great ambiance.

Unfortunately, the story itself is uneven. While truly good at some points, it is often goofy and always predictable. In addition to being predictable, the author errs, in my opinion, by not providing enough survivors. The initial outbreak claims all but six characters, and two of them are protected by Hero Death Immunity - two canonical characters in a very questionable cameo. No matter how grim things seem for our survivors, there is very little dramatic tension since we know that, at worst, only four of them can possibly suffer any permanent consequences. A larger cast with no "untouchables" would have helped the story considerably.

I would recommend this book to a friend, but only on the condition they were a huge fan of both Star Wars AND zombies.

Couldn't put it down

Luckily its not very long because I just couldn't stop listening. Kept my interest up throughout and I just can't complain about anything in the book. It has thematic star wars sound effects including ship background ambiance sounds and blasters, not to mention wookie growls. Yes, Chewie is there with Han Solo too! Just amazing really and the narrator does an excellent job.

I am not even a Star Wars fan, and this would be my first book I've ever read or listened to about Star Wars. I got interested in it because of the zombies. The combination is really cool, but neither Star Wars nor Zombies get in the way of telling this scary and unique story. I thought the Star Wars setting would distract from the story, but it didn't t all. This book is about a scary infection that turned people into zombies. It just happened to do it in space, and that space was the Star Wars universe. While its not like any other zombie story I've read, it is creepy, gory, thrilling, bloody and everything like that.

Zombies + Star Wars = Win

This book is exactly what I was hoping for when I first saw it in the store. A zombie tale based in the Star Wars universe. I really wasn't looking for much more than a well written tale that encompassed that & that's what this is. Could this have been told in any sci-fi universe? Yeah, probably, but it is still cool to see it in this universe.

The zombies aren't ground breaking, but they do several things that are nontraditional which is nice. The author also makes good use of description to make the zombies personal and all the more scary. He also makes good use of small details to tie things together and doesn't forget items introduced early in the book later. There were a few points of escape or people ending up where they weren't expected which would have been nice to have more explanation, but sometimes it's fun just to imagine.

Some have said that the use of actual Star Wars characters didn't save it, but I would rather have not had any iconic characters. They were completely unnecessary as they didn't do anything particularly in line with their characters (nothing was out of line either). They really could have been anyone playing their roles. I would have been happier if all characters had been unique to the story.

Warning for parents of small children: there is a scene with a young Wookie that is just heartbreaking. It was well written and realistically fit with the story, but wow it was hard to hear.

In short you have storm troopers, imperials, Wookies, etc. all in a well written survival horror zombie tale based on a Star Destroyer, what more can you ask for?

In a Canon Far, Far Away...

A long, long time ago... in a canon far, far away...

Bottom line to this book, it's entertaining and blends in people who like Star Wars with people who like zombies, folds it into a story and delivers a unique "what if" moment. Writing was good, story itself was good, but don't go at this with Fan Boy teeth bared ready to defend how/why this could or shouldn't happen. It's entertainment and the fact that they brought it Han and Chewie adds to the fan fun of it all.

Star Wars with zombies

Atmospheric, dark and descriptive this is one of the best things to happen to the Star Wars expanded universe.
The writing of Joe Schreiber with narration from Sean Kenin combined with some immersive sound effects will have you visualising every gruesome moment in this tale.

It's proven so popular that a sequel is already being written.

Zombies In Space

This is a superb addition to the Star Wars universe, blending horror with sci-fi. It tells the tale of an Imperial Prison Barge that stumbles upon a seemingly deserted Star Destroyer. All is not as it seems, and the boarding party gets infected with a virus that kills them, and then brings them back as the Undead.
Joe Schreiber does a fine job of incorporating zombie lore into his narrative. The narration is superb, and there are just enough sound effects (e.g. blaster shots, the whooshing of doors, the enraged cries of the undead etc.) to add to the atmosphere without becoming distracting (as I originally thought it would when I first started listening to this audiobook). Schreiber creates some marvellous action set pieces, and is not afraid to kill off some of the main characters, creating a genuine sense of tension - the only two characters you can be certain won't become zombie food are the two guest stars from the Star Wars movies - I don't want to spoil the surprise, so I won't name them here.
I happily rate this audiobook as 5 stars, and would recommend it to anyone. Listen and enjoy!

A Different Take on a Familiar Galaxy.

My first Star Wars audio book ever was about Darth Revan, my favourite Sith Lord. After listening to it and being amazed and hooked on it by not only the performance but the sound effects as well as the music, I was quite certain that I would not find another audio book like it.

But I was wrong. Star Wars and zombies is a combination one would not normally think of but it works brilliantly. Whilst it does focus on new characters some old faces do appear in it (which kind of disappointed me because you just knew they were going to survive).

The one thing that stood out from the rest though whilst listening is the audio effects. The screams the zombies make is brilliantly terrifying.

Zombies?

Your typical zombie story, but in the Star Wars universe. So I liked it. A lot of cliché's and very predictable at some parts, it still is a decent read. The voice acting needed more "in context" emotion, though. No matter what was happening, every character seemed to have a non-committal, conversational tone, like the dialogue was all entirely monologuing

yeah

I enjoyed this book well enough, I think the fact that I was listening while at work helped, if I was sitting down with a physical copy or was listening at home I might not have, there's some great sound effects that are gross and its a fun enough book.
Also an uneccisary cameo that im not sure If i liked or disliked.
