Story
After endless years of fighting in a galaxy-wide war, the most decorated super-soldier of the Old Federation was granted leave, sliding into a stasis tube aboard a sleeper ship. The ship never reached its port, and the soldier woke up a thousand years later on an operating table. The Old Federation was gone, most planets hurled back into the Stone Age. A devastated Earth used spies instead of spaceships to compete against the tougher, richer worlds.

Story
We were fighting on the wrong side of a war we couldn't win. And that was the good news. The Ruhar hit us on Columbus Day. There we were, innocently drifting along the cosmos on our little blue marble, like the native Americans in 1492. Over the horizon come ships of a technologically advanced, aggressive culture, and BAM! There go the good old days, when humans only got killed by each other. So, Columbus Day. It fits. When the morning sky twinkled again, this time with Kristang starships jumping in to hammer the Ruhar, we thought we were saved.

Story
In the 20th century Earth sent probes, transmissions, and welcoming messages to the stars. Unfortunately, someone noticed. The Galactics arrived with their battle fleet in 2052. Rather than being exterminated under a barrage of hell-burners, Earth joined their vast Empire. Swearing allegiance to our distant alien overlords wasn't the only requirement for survival. We also had to have something of value to trade, something that neighboring planets would pay their hard-earned credits to buy. As most of the local worlds were too civilized to have a proper army, the only valuable service Earth could provide came in the form of soldiers....

Story
They hunt us. They bomb our worlds for target practice. A star cluster in the constellation of Orion rotates once every 1,000 years. Those who rule there have an ancient tradition: When each cycle ends, they train their fleets by spilling the blood of lesser beings. The enemy fleets are coming again. In response, the Rebel Worlds gather their starships to face the terrifying threat, and this time humanity is asked to stand with them. The last time they considered Earth, Vikings in longboats were raiding English coastlines. Today, we're less primitive. Today, we're a target.

To make matters worse, there’s a murderer running loose on board the ship, critically low fuel levels, and the Grish are back, in fast pursuit and ready to finish what they’d started. Only by sheer luck - and a good measure of cagey smarts - will Quintos be able to rise to the challenge.

Publisher's Summary
Earth's last Assault Troopers become Star Vikings, raiding alien worlds. In the third book of the Extinction Wars series, the Emperor of the Lokhars declares a holy crusade against the last humans, promising to finish what he started. Years ago at his orders, the Lokhars nuked the Earth and sprayed it with a bio-terminator. Creed has begun raiding alien worlds for more starships and the tech needed to clean the radioactive Earth. But how can his handful of cruisers stop the approaching armada? If Creed hopes to save humanity, he'll need to unlock the secrets of the Forerunner artifact he brought back from hyperspace. Then, in a race against time, he'll have to risk everything on a desperate raid into the heart of the alien empire.

Did not like the ending
All in all this is a good distraction. The main character Creed is very shallow and needs some depth. The story will keep you engaged however the ending is very condensed and abrupt almost like it needed to end for a dead line. I may not read the next one.

Yep it is almost like Vikings in space.
What made the experience of listening to Star Viking the most enjoyable?
The narrator is perfect.
How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?
I don't know. It's a lot like the previous two in the series. Even the main character is very one dimensional.
Which character – as performed by Christian Rummel – was your favorite?
Creed
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes but it was just too long to do so.
Any additional comments?
Third in the Extinction Wars series. If it ain't broke don't fix it right? The formula that worked so well in the first book, is really starting to wear thin by this book. But hey we've got this dude that will take down the hordes of arrogant aliens, save the world, and stumble upon some answers to the ancient machines and the Creator. What's not to like?
Claath didn't show up at all in this, which was a bit disappointing. However the grand plot did move along. Some info is revealed about the ancient machines, but mainly more questions are left to ponder about them.
There are clearly more books in this series to come. While I enjoyed this book I'm just not sure I can take much more of Creed being the stubborn, "damn the space nukes, full speed ahead," lucky guy that he is. According to the book 8 years have past, yet everyone is the exact same character they were in the first book. I would expect some change. At least maybe a real introspective moment at some point. Having said that I'm looking forward to the next book if only to learn the secret of the machines.

Very Surprised
Ok so I initially started this series with some trepidation. as I got into book 2, I was really in anricipation of contnuing. By the time I got to book 3, I couldn't wait to start listening. The author provides you with an action packed and very enjoyable listen. I really liked the sarcastic humor of Commander Greer. Several times during the series I caught myself giggling, and cheering him and his crew. only wish that he had saved his girl. that would have been the icing on the chivalry cake.
Once again, Christian Rummel delivered a superb narration. His ability to mimic characters accents, and to distinguish between male and female characters makes his narrations believable and enjoyable. His narration really gives this story that extra punch. I look forward to listening to more from both the narrator and the author..
