Publisher's summary

Lieutenant Callum Harper hadn't intended on punching his commanding officer quite so hard. But maybe it wasn't such a bad turn of events. Court-martialed and dumped on a reject raft bound for Earth, Cal feels optimistic about a life where getting blown up, shot, or even eaten is altogether less of a concern. And, more importantly, a life where the only person he's responsible for is himself.

Unfortunately fate doesn't favor the mundane. Crash-landing on a lethal planet, and with technology failing all around him, Cal must take his fellow passengers under his wing in order to survive and unravel the reasons behind their situation. But the cause is far worse than any of them could have imagined, for theirs is a small part of a much larger crisis. Colonized space is under attack. Humanity is on the verge of chaos. And those who enjoy such anarchy are already beginning to thrive. Yet Cal and his new companions will discover that mankind isn't the true threat, not by a long shot.

Good crew of characters and great story telling

Where does Star Splinter rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

It's up there. Star Splinter has the simplicity of a Heinlein book which is great because many sci fi authors tend to over do it of late.

What other book might you compare Star Splinter to and why?

Hard to say it stands alone

What does Alex Wyndham bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Great narration really let's my imagination relax and the world of Cresseu is created around me.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Did not cry. Laughed several times, if was a breath of fresh air in sci fi

Any additional comments?

Keep them coming!!!!!!!!!!!

Very entertaining

Of over 1,000 audio books I've purchased, I've given 5 star ratings to less than ten of them. Great imagery and plotting well delivered by a skilled voice artist. A good team that I hope continue to work together.

Better than .5

This time the narrator worked for me. In Harper's Ten his accent threw me off & didn't make sense to me. Distracted from the storty for the first 1/3 or so. Not so with this book It seemed to fit. Enjoyed this even more & can't wait to listen to the next installment.

Action-packed start of a new series

This is a difficult review for me to write. I really enjoyed the book and found myself listening to it whenever possible. But it wasn't the kind of story that made me stay up late into the night. The stories that make me late to work or want to call in sick are the ones that get 5 stars from me.

As a first book Star Splinter has what it takes to become a promising new series, and the author should be commended. It contained many of the elements a good sci-fi story should - decent character development, plausible tech, an alien menace, and plenty of action. Missing for me were things like character back stories and more descriptive military tactics. The ships, weapons and other human enhancements were imaginative but lacked the kind of depth that I enjoy but other readers might find boring.

Other things that knocked a star off my rating were the cliched caricatures that made up the main plot line - like the smart-mouthed girl, boy genius, wise old man, beautiful scientist, pirates, and cyborgs. I rolled my eyes more than once but I suppose they needed to be there for the story to ultimately take the the shape it did. After a while I began to feel like there was too much "borrowing" from other story's cast of characters.

Having said that, there was enough here to keep me reading consistently each day until it was finished. I truly enjoyed all the different landscapes and locales the story took us to. I also found the descriptions of the various alien races interesting and unique. Cal was also well written as a good leader although a reluctant one. The fight scenes were well done too, but things always seemed to be working in the team's favor just in the nick of time too often.

As for the narrator, Alex Whyndam, bravo. He was excellent. I literally could not imagine any of the characters from this point forward being spoken by anyone but Wyndham.

Considering I've been on a bit of a sci-fi binge the last 12 months, devouring book after book, I say give Star Splinter a chance. I wouldn't put it up there in my top 10, but easily in my top 25 this year. I expect the author will continue to improve as the series rolls along, and I look forward to the next one.
