“A bewitching gem...I absolutely loved every moment of this story.” —Stephanie Garber, #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Caraval series
“If you loved the Hogwarts Library…you’ll be right at home at Summershall.” —Katherine Arden, New York Times bestselling author of The Bear and the Nightingale
From the New York Times bestselling author of An Enchantment of Ravens comes an “enthralling adventure” (Kirkus Reviews, starred review) about an apprentice at a magical library who must battle a powerful sorcerer to save her kingdom.
All sorcerers are evil. Elisabeth has known that as long as she has known anything. Raised as a foundling in one of Austermeer’s Great Libraries, Elisabeth has grown up among the tools of sorcery—magical grimoires that whisper on shelves and rattle beneath iron chains. If provoked, they transform into grotesque monsters of ink and leather.
Then an act of sabotage releases the library’s most dangerous grimoire, and Elisabeth is implicated in the crime. With no one to turn to but her sworn enemy, the sorcerer Nathaniel Thorn, and his mysterious demonic servant, she finds herself entangled in a centuries-old conspiracy. Not only could the Great Libraries go up in flames, but the world along with them.
As her alliance with Nathaniel grows stronger, Elisabeth starts to question everything she’s been taught—about sorcerers, about the libraries she loves, even about herself. For Elisabeth has a power she has never guessed, and a future she could never have imagined.

"There’s a lot of really cool things going on here, but what really got me was that there are magic books in this story. They’re called grimoires, and they’re what sorcerers read to learn magic. They’re like the books at Hogwarts, but with even more personality. They can talk, and they need to be cared for, so being a librarian is far from a leisurely job. That’s what our main character, Elisabeth, is training to be when the action happens—it’s a librarian adventure fantasy story! If that isn’t catnip for us YA fantasy lovers, I don’t know what is. This listen, with Emily Ellet at the helm as narrator, promises much, and it follows through from beginning to end."

I enjoyed the main characters. The romance was cheesy or forced and their development was fluid. I loved Silus, he was very interesting. I would have liked to get more information about his background with the Thorne family.
I was very excited to read this book at first and it did not disappoint on story telling. I gave it 4 stars because there was a lack of world building and back story that made me have to fill in some blanks myself and made the ending anti-climactic and the villains plot not make any real sense. Maybe it did but I didn't catch it properly because unimportant scenes where drawn out. The areas that could have used more storytelling were replaced with trivial scenes that could have been removed. I was a bit disappointed with the ending, There was very little action when it could have been a fall out demon battle. That would have given it 5 stars...but instead we got the opposite and the ending came in a flash of light..literally.
So it was too long with added plot points thrown in but not fully explored and parts that were not explained when they should have been. Maybe there is going to be a sequel..which I might check out, but I wont be re-reading this one anytime soon.
Enjoyable, verrrrrrry unique

A Sorcery of Thorns just touches my heart.
I adore the characters, the concept, the connections, the sweet romance, the lead fella and his family history and his relationship with his demon.
Another reviewer mentioned places where there could have been more back story and world building, and this is a solid point, but I never really missed anything about background , history, or needing a bigger more showy ending.
It’s a comfort book for me personally, I’ve now listened to it , I believe 3 maybe 4 times and I’m still in Love.
There is truly something really unique and special about this author and how she creates characters.
For me it hits the spot on so many levels.
You can’t and won’t please everyone as a writer/or with any craft, reviews are totally subjective, how people experience a book is so personal and unique to that individual.
For me this book is MAGICAL and one of my happiness places to visit.
One of my all time favorites
