Publisher's summary

First appearances deceive in the newest charming and heartwarming Regency romance in the Westcott series from beloved New York Times best-selling author Mary Balogh.

Abigail Westcott's dreams for her future were lost when her father died and she discovered her parents were not legally married. But now, six years later, she enjoys the independence a life without expectation provides a wealthy single woman. Indeed, she's grown confident enough to scold the careless servant chopping wood outside without his shirt on in the proximity of ladies. But the man is not a servant. He is Gilbert Bennington, the lieutenant colonel and superior officer who has escorted her wounded brother, Harry, home from the wars with Napoleon.

Gil has come to help his friend and junior officer recover, and he doesn't take lightly to being condescended to - secretly because of his own humble beginnings. If at first Gil and Abigail seem to embody what the other most despises, each will soon discover how wrong first impressions can be. For behind the appearances of the once-grand lady and the once-humble man are two people who share an understanding of what true honor means, and how only with it can one find love.

Another good one in the series

Gills character is very likeable and the overall story was well done. I like that occasionally Balough addresses difficult topics that are still pertinent to today. There were a few things I didn’t like. Namely, Abigail has been the sweet cheerful female in the series but she really wasn’t in this book. Usually Baloughs characters stay true to themselves but in this case it felt like a sudden shift change. Also, in the beginning I felt like maybe I’d missed a book between the last one and this. So much time had passed! As always there’s a lot of downtime and characters “thinking” and not enough of their love story development.

Not as enjoyable as her others..

I have to agree with other readers, like me, having listened to many of this authors works. Too much repetition in this story and describing the character Gil as unpleasant in the extreme. Rosalyn Landor is perfect as always which keeps me from deserting this read before the ending.

I cried lol

This story made me cry frustrated, sad, and happy tears. It was a very engaging story, and I only wish there was a 2nd epilogue for these two.

Finding Love

Loved this next book in the series. Abigail Westcott has been somewhat lost for the last 6 years when it was discovered that her father was a bigamist and that she after 18 years was illegitimate. When her brother Harry finally makes it home from war with the help of Lt. Colonel Gilbert Bennington she wants to stay and help. As she gets to know Gilbert she likes him better. When he explains some of his life her brother Harry suggests that they marry so he can gain custody of his daughter. A beautifully written story with an even more beautiful ending.

Another Heartwarming Novel by Mary Balogh

This heartwarming novel by Mary Balogh really had a different slant from others. The hero, Gil, is scarred accross his mouth and chin. He's intimidating at first sight and unfriendly - expecting people to goggle at him and be repulsed. Abigail is. Gil has had little experience with gently bred women and none of it very good.
There follows the one step forward, two steps back forging of a relationship. They do come to care for one another, but very slowly and without much demonstrative affection.
They really come together in a court battle to get custody of Gil's daughter from his first marriage. All the Westcott family comes to support them in court. Earlier some Westcotts enlisted the aid of Gil's natural father and he addresses the judge. The judge rules that the little girl be returned to her father by her grandparents.
It's not often that I read romances with both main characters having difficulty expressing themselves even to each other. By the end, however, I was hopeful that even they would have their happily ever after.

This was a sweet story. I have been a little burned out with the romance novels, but this book snapped me out of my rut.
