When the solar flares first erupt, Cameron tries to rationalize the disaster away. The electrical grid will come back up. The government will reassure the panicked populace. The hurricanes, tornadoes, and earthquakes will abate. Most importantly, Cameron’s husband and daughter will get home safely from New York City.

Instead, Cameron finds herself alone as the world tears itself apart.

Her best hope for refuge is the family’s isolated cabin, but distance isn’t the only obstacle Cameron faces. Society has been destroyed, and a bunch of scared, confused people are trying to figure out how to survive. They need a leader with a firm grip on reality and a steady hand, but does Cameron want the responsibility of so many lives?

Meanwhile, Cameron’s family travels across a ruined America in a quest to reunite with her. Alex believes that his wife is safe at their cabin in the Pacific Northwest, but he doesn’t know if his diabetic daughter, Piper, can survive the journey without access to insulin. As father and daughter fight to survive, they bear witness to not only the horrific violence desperation unleashes but also the grace and compassion of ordinary people.

Great character development and storyline, and the narration is icing on the cake. Finished the book in just 2 days, and hoping it’s the first in a series!

Hope there’s a sequel!

Story wasn’t bad. The side story of the stalker/peeping Tom was a bit much. Kinda story where you know nothing bad is gonna happen to the main characters.

Not bad

I’ve wanted to physically read this book since it came out, but I hadn’t had time to sit still, so the moment it dropped on Audible I got it and DEVOURED it while driving. I. Did. Not. Stop. Listening. except to SLEEP. Now I’m kicking myself for not reading it sooner!

I can see why this book has won awards, the content, the pacing, the humor... there was a time I woke my husband up laughing, even! It’s straightforward and suspenseful, and I found the characters to be believable. Reading about how someone with Type 1 Diabetes would survive in this situation (especially your child) was heartrending. I’m hoping Mr. Hunt continues this saga, to see how that all plays out.

I love Kate Reading and Michael Kramer in everything they do, and they were perfect for this book.

Now I can’t stop thinking about how my family would deal in this situation, so, THANKS FOR THAT, MR. HUNT!!!

I can’t believe it took me so long...

The storyline pulls you in from the first chapter and keeps you on the ride the whole way through. It took a bit to get used to the narration style. Highly recommend this book to all Sci-Fi fans!

Great storyline

This book was a great listen. I like that it wasn’t a typical apocalyptic book. The struggle of the father and daughter to get home was a great perspective and the mother waiting for their return as she dealt with her own problems in keeping a small group of survivors alive and safe. The two narrators was a new thing for me but I thought they did a great job.
