Publisher's Summary

Edward Lincoln is a worldwide celebrity who plays impossibly daring detectives on the big screen. But in reality, he is an ordinary man currently stuck in an extraordinary spot. Nerissa, his ailing godmother, had pleaded with him to travel to South Africa to investigate whether someone was tampering with her racehorses. He could not refuse her.

Once there, Lincoln is overwhelmed by autograph hounds and high suspicions. And when sudden perils cross his path and murder makes a horrific appearance, Lincoln, the actor-turned-investigator, is plunged into a plot of gold, greed, and gilded lives. He ultimately realizes that the only way to uncover the killer is to give not only the performance of his life, but a performance to save his life.

Earlier recording was MUCH, MUCH better!

Pity that they re-recorded this as the characterizations were much better by the previous narrator. This version is unimaginative by comparison and boring to listen to.

Splendid

I’d known of him - in fact knew his editor - but never read him. Now I want to read his oeuvre. Wicked clever, realistic, and totally engaging.

Solid but not the best

I am a fan of Dick Francis many works this book was good but was not his best. the suspense is generally there but the audio quality is inconsistent and the reading was okay as well. there are times when the book goes off on tangents and is very slow paced but the reader does a very good job at switching between South Australian American and English accents.

Smoke stream

At chapter 15 the book stopped and said to download the rest of the book. I could not find a way to continue a download. So I lost out. Never happened before.

Curious situation from the beginning.

The rich characters brought to life by talented narrator. Unique and compelling situational story. Well worth the journey throughout the tale. Buckle up.

I love Francis novels and I miss Simon Prebble

Francis always writes excellent mystery's. Always. So I recommend all Dick Francis Novels prior to 2001. Dick Francis' writing partner and wife passed away then. The combination of the two was remarkable. I haven't read any of the books written by Felix and Dick Francis so I can't comment on them. I read one after his wife died and immediately knew something was off. I didn't purchase anymore after that. I know the more recent books are written by father and son and eventually by Felix himself. They may be very good; I just haven't gotten around to reading them.

I wanted to comment on the narration by Geoffrey Howard. He does a fairly straight reading but with very little voice acting. This could have been a superb book if narrated by Simon Prebble
